The
positive significant
effect of these treatments was observedmainly
insingle pregnant
ewes; this observation was correlated with a
significant
increase of milkyields during
machinemilking
when r!-3 cestradiol wasinjected
tosheep
selected for their lowplasma œstrogen
levelsduring
pregnancy. Hormonal treatments at the end of pregnancy,increasing plasma
levels ofprolactin, thyroxin
and corticoids, were without effect on milkyields during
machinemilking
for 28
days.

of cestradiol benzoate( 15 mg)

The
inadapted
reactions of the ewe can lead to difficulties in thepractice
ofsheep
husban-dry:
refusal of lambs, difficulties infostering
as inadaptation
to artificialfeeding.
Thestudy
ofmaternal behaviour can
help
insolving
theseproblems.
The rcsultspresented
hereonly
dealwith the mutual
recognition
of lamb and ewe.Some individual
recognition
isaccomplished
at a distanceby 1>leats;
however, the successof a
suckling attempt
at a short distancedepends
on ewe identification of the lambby
olfaction.Ewe anosmia eliminates lamb discrimination. Such females allow any young to
suclcle,
the behaviouial sequenceleading
tosuckling being disorganized.
This indicates that the maternal bond is established
by olfactory
euesduring
a criticalperiod postpartum;
the role of other sensory informationdevelops
laterthrough
thelearning
process.
