ATPC is providing Training for Regional Economic Communities on using Econometric Tools for Trade Analysis.

Addis Ababa 28 April 2010 (ECA) - The African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), is hosting a “Training Seminar on Market Analysis Tools for Trade Flow Analysis and Modelling Trade Negotiations Outcomes” from 26 – 30 April in Dakar, Senegal.

The Training programme was jointly developed with the African Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP), based in Dakar, where the workshop is taking place.

Mr. Stephen Karingi, the Chief of Trade and International Negotiations at ECA opened the seminar on behalf of Mr. Abdoulie Janneh, United Nations Under-Secretary General and Executive Secretary of ECA.

He reiterated the commitment of ECA through the ATPC to continue building the necessary skills and capacities among African countries and RECs to ensure that Africa moves from being a peripheral partner to a key player in international trade.

This Training Seminar is a direct response to a request originally made by Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to ATPC, but was also extended to include participants from the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The training will assist African countries and RECs in acquiring the necessary capacities and skills to enhance their trade policy analysis capabilities, which is an important requirement for the regional and multilateral trade negotiations in which they are involved. The course will cover both market analysis tools and modelling techniques for trade negotiation outcomes.

The Training Seminar is also a unique opportunity for participants from ECOWAS, EAC and SADC Member States to exchange information and ideas about the challenges of accessing and interpreting trade information; and how to best use the available information as input for the development of country strategies and policy design for trade, in support of both their public and private sectors.

The course is being led by experts from EDA, ATPC and the International Trade Centre (ITC).
