Statement on Bill C‐54 “Not Criminally Responsible Reform Act”
Calgary, Alberta, February 8, 2013 – The Government of Canada today tabled legislation to change certain provisions governing persons deemed not criminally responsible on account of a mental disorder.
We are committed to working with the government to promote mental health, prevent mental health problems and illnesses wherever possible, and to achieving a transformed recovery‐oriented mental health system in Canada.
Changing Directions, Changing Lives: The Mental Health Strategy for Canada remains the cornerstone of our efforts to change attitudes and fight the stigma faced by people living with mental health problems and illnesses and to create a mental health system that can meet the needs of people of all ages. The Mental Health Commission of Canada will thoroughly examine this legislation before commenting further.
