1. Cauchy-Pompeiu formula (this is a generalization, published by Pompeiu in 1905, of the classical Cauchy formula from 1825). Let Ω ⊂ C be a bounded open subset such that the boundary ∂Ω is piecewiseC1, and letf : Ω→Cbe a C1 function on the closure Ω. Then

(a)

f(z)dz= 2i Z Z

(b) f(z0) = 1

∂z dλ

for everyz0∈Ω, wheredλ=dx∧dy is the Lebesgue measure on C(andz=x+iy).

Hint. For (a), apply the Stokes formule with α = f(z)dz, and compute dα. For (b), replace f with g(z) = z−zf(z)

0 and Ω with Ωε = ΩrD(z0, ε). Then take the limit as ε → 0, by means of a change of variable z = z0+εe on the (oriented) circle bounding the disc D(z0, ε). One has to check that the functionz7→ z−z1

0 is actually integrable for the Lebesgue measure in a neighborhood ofz0.

(c) Derive from the Pompeiu formula that, in the sense of distributions, one has ∂z (πz1 ) =δ0 on C. (d) Prove formula (c) in another way, by checking first that (∗∗) ∂z (log|z|2) = 1z on C, and then by applying the formula for∂∂log|z|2 given in the course.

Hint. Formula (∗∗) is obviously valid on C. To show its validity on C, compute the derivative of (1−ρ(z/ε)) log|z|2 where ρ ≥ 0 is a C function with support in the disc D(0,1), equal to 1 on D(0,1/2), and show that one can pass to the weak limit as ε→0.

(e) Show that the equation ∂z u=vhas a solution u∈Cp(C,C)for every given functionv∈Ccp(C)with compact support. What are the other solutions ?

Hint. In general, for any constant coefficient differential operatorP(D) possessing a “fundamental solu- tion”E on Rn (i.e. a distributionE such thatP(D)E =δ0), any equationP(D)u=v with a compactly supported function or distributionvin the right hand side, admits the convolutionu=E∗vas a solution.

(f) If Ω ⊂C is a disc D(0, R), show that the equation ∂z u = v has a solution u ∈ Cp(Ω,C) for every given function v∈Cp(Ω,C).

Hint. Multiplyvby a cutoff function to getvk with compact support inΩk=D(0, R−2−k), equal tov on Ωk−1. For euk =E∗vk, show that the differences euk+1−euk are holomorphic on Ωk−1, and observe (by truncating their power series at0) that one can find inductively polynomials Pk ∈C[z]such that the functionsuk=uek+Pk converge uniformly on every compact subset ofΩtowards a solution u∈Cp(Ω).

2. (a) Let ϕ ∈ C2(D(0, R),R), where D(0, R) ⊂ C. Show that for all 0 < r0 < r < R, the following generalized Jensen formulaholds:

1 2π

Z

0

ϕ(re)dθ− 1 2π

0

ϕ(r0e)dθ = 1 π

Z r

D(0,t)

∆ϕ dλ,

where∆is the usual Laplace operator on C'R2. Hint. Compute the derivative drd R

0 ϕ(re)dθby differentiation under the integral sign, and use Stokes’

theorem to relate that integral toR

D(0,t)∆ϕ dλ.

(b) Derive from (a) that whenϕ∈C2(Ω,R) is subharmonic and D(z0, R)⊂Ω, the mean value function µ(z0, r) = 1 R

0 ϕ(z0+re)dθ is non decreasing on[0, R[, and in fact, thatt7→µ(z0, et)is convex (one says thatr7→µ(z0, r)is a convex non decreasing function of logr).

(c) Conversely, if for every z0∈Ω there exists a sequence rν → 0 (possibly depending on z0) such that µ(z0, rν)≥ϕ(z0), then ∆ϕ≥0on Ω, i.e.ϕis subharmonic.
