Symmetrization (or rearrangement) of a function is used for several purposes in the ®eld of partial differential equations, [1, 2, 4, 11, 12, 13]. One area where it has played a signi®cant role is the study of ground states of scalar ®eld equations of the form

It is one of the simplest results concerning symmetrization but our assumptions (essentially that G is Borel measurable) are a little weaker than those required in other approaches. Our results concerning (1.3) are given in § 5. The essential ingredients of our approach apply directly to CaratheÂodory functions having certain monotonicity properties and this leads directly to Proposition 5.1 which establishes (1.3) for all functions u in the class F
