J u s t a y e a r e a r l i e r t h a n the p u b l i c a t i o n o f the p r e s e n t essay, P a t t i L a t h e r ' s (1991) b r i l l i a n t b o o k , Getting Smart, o p e n e d u p n e w l i n e s o f t h i n k -i n g a b o u t e m a n c -i p a t o r y r e s e a r c h a n d p r a c t -i c e -i m p o r t a n t -i n b o t h p s y c h o l o g y a n d e d u c a t i o n . I n r e s e a r c h a n d i n p r a c t i c e , h o w d o we m o v e f r o m o u r positivist p r e o c c u p a t i o n s w i t h " t r u t h " t o w a r d the p r o d u c t i v i t y o f l a n g u a g e w i t h i n w h a t B a k h t i n (1981:358) has t e r m e d "the f r a m i n g a u t h o r i a l c o n -t e x -t ? " L a -t h e r poses f u r -t h e r q u e s -t i o n s f o r us: • i n o u r r e s e a r c h h o w d o we frame m e a n i n g p o s s i b i l i t i e s r a t h e r t h a n c l o s i n g t h e m off?

• w h y d o we d o research? T o give v o i c e to subjugated k n o w l e d g e ? A s a n o t h e r v e r s i o n o f w r i t i n g o u r self? T o c a p i t a l i z e o n o u r p r i v i l e g e d p o s i t i o n i n a c a d e m e to f u r t h e r o u r o w n careers a n d wealth?

L a t h e r sees p r a c t i c e as a n " e n g i n e o f i n n o v a t i o n " a n d argues that the l e g i t i m a c y o f k n o w l e d g e d e p e n d s u p o n its d e s c e n t d o w n f r o m t h e o r y i n t o the level o f p r a c t i c e a n d b e c o m i n g i m m a n e n t i n it. I n this r e g a r d , L a t h e r ' s p o s i t i o n is q u i t e s i m i l a r to a n o t h e r c o n t r i b u t o r , D o n a l d P o l k i n g h o m e w h o writes: "the c r i t e r i o n f o r a c c e p t a b i l i t y o f a k n o w l e d g e c l a i m is the fruitfulness o f its i m p l e m e n t a t i o n . . . the e p i s t e m o l o g y o f p r a c t i s e d has shifted f r o m m e t a p h o r s o f c o r r e c t n e s s to those o f u t i l i t y " (p. 162).

T h e interest i n b r i e f e r a n d m o r e cost-effective m o d e l s o f p s y c h o t h e r a p y is i n c r e a s i n g l y attractive f o r m a n y agencies a n d c l i n i c s — i n c l u d i n g u n i v e r s i t y c o u n s e l l i n g c e n t r e s — f a c i n g the c h a l l e n g e o f p r o v i d i n g q u a l i t y service i n a n e r a o f i n c r e a s i n g d e m a n d s a n d d i m i n i s h i n g resources.
