Visoko multipart singing from Dolen and Satovcha, South-western Bulgaria

D E C L A R A T I O N S O F S U P P O R T

The application “Visoko multipart singing from Dolen and Satovcha, South-western Bulgaria” has received wide support from the bearers of this unique cultural heritage, from the members of the communities of the two villages, public institutions in their representatives; and from government authorities on local and regional level.

The consent and support for inscribing “Visoko multipart singing from Dolen and Satovcha, South-western Bulgaria” on UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity were expressed in written declarations of uniform text in Bulgarian and English language. The texts of the declarations were prepared in collaboration with the

“St. St. Kiril i Metodiy” Community Centre in Satovcha; they were distributed among the community and collected by the Community Centre’s secretary and leader of the Children’s group, Ms. Katerina Kodzhamanova. The declarations outside the community were collected by experts from the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

All the declarations demonstrate the free and informed consent of the local communities, institutional representatives and separate individuals for the inscription of visoko multipart singing on UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. All concerned parties were informed in advance about the preparation of this nomination and expressed their support, underlining their readiness to cooperate and share experience with communities and institutions in other countries.

Approval of the application and support for the safeguarding measures for the visoko singing tradition were expressed in declarations from the following groups:

1. Singers from the women’s singing group at the Community Centre: Mariya Chobanova, Nayle Dzhildova, Pelagiya Terzieva, Bistra Parusheva, Velichka Karabunarova, Anita Peteva, Vasilka Trendafilova, Snezhana Dzhalova, Marusya Lozanova, Katerina Kodzhamanova;

2. Participants in the children’s singing group, their parents, and the group’s leader, Ms. Katerina Kodzhamanova;

3. Zaira Bakalova-Ibisheva from Satovcha – individual performer of visoko singing;

4. Silveta Manevska and Atidje Sharkova from Dolen – individual performers of visoko singing;

Му name is Zayra Bakalova-Ibisheva and I am student of Mr. Iliya Terziev – a teacher of Music in the village of Satovcha. I joined the group [of visoko singing] in 1977. Our teacher, Mr. Terziev, taught us to love the songs of Satovcha already from childhood age. As participants in the choir at the local school, we were introduced and nurtured with great love in many songs and this feeling remains alive until today. I do my best to support the group of “visoko singing” during participations in festivals and reviews of folklore.

In the groups, I sang in duet with Ana Kodzhamanova-Nacheva. We learnt many songs from her mother Geza Kodzhamanova. When we did not cope well with the singing, she sent us for help to one of the group leaders, Stoyanka Pavlova. She knew so many songs and we did our best to learn as much as possible from her. My children sing the songs of Satovcha and although they live abroad nowadays, they carry our songs in their hearts.

Today I am no longer a performer in the group of “visoko singing,” but I keep the songs in my heart wherever I go and I always sing them when we gather on various occasions. It is difficult to forget the songs of Satovcha; we were brought up to keep them always in our souls. It was with love that people gave it to us, and we will preserve it and hand it over with love to the younger generation.

Visoko songs are in the roots our souls. They will always live and will be sung forever.
