Je souhaiteremerieren premierlieu lesdeux personnesqui m'ontguidéeau oursde es trois
ans: Gilbert Levitt et ZlilSela. Tousdeux ontfait preuve d'unegrande disponibilité et d'une
inniepatienefaeàmesquestions.J'aipuappréiertoutpartiulièrementlafailitédeGilbert
pour improviser une expliation au tableau, déroulant devant mes petits yeux ébahis tout un
pande mathématiques dont jen'avaispas soupçonné l'existene. Son attentionau détail,et sa
persévéranepour résoudreavemoi desproblèmestehniques pastoujourspassionnantsm'ont
étéd'uneaidepréieuse.QuantàZlil,ilasumefairedéouvrirsonuniversmathématiqueetme
révélerpeuàpeulesdiversaspetsdeedomainepassionnant.Sagentillesseet sasimpliitéont
grandementontribuéàmemettreàl'aisedèsmonpremierséjouràJérusalem.
J'exprimeégalementtoutemareonnaissaneauxdeuxrapporteurs,ThomasDelzantetPanos
Papasoglu,quionténormémentontribuéàl'améliorationdeetexteparleursremarquesetleurs
onseils. Je remerie tout partiulièrement Thomaspour lesquelques jours qu'il m'a onsarés
àStrasbourg, et pourundîner de tartesambées en familletrès sympathique. Quant àPanos,
quinepeutmalheureusementpasêtreiiaujourd'hui,jeleremeried'avoiraepté ettelourde
tâhe,prouvantainsiqu'ilnem'apasgardéranunepourl'avoirbattuaupendu àBerkeley.
Jeremerieégalementlesautresmembresdujury:TunaAltinelquiapporteaujurylepoint
de vue indispensable d'un logiien, et Vinent Guirardel, qui a été de bon onseil à plusieurs
reprisesestroisdernièresannées.
Jeprote deetteoasionpourremeriertouslesprofesseursqui m'ontinspirée,dulyéeà
lathèse et grâeàqui (à ause dequi?) j'ai hoiside fairede lareherheen mathématiques :

remerietoutpartiulièrementesdeuxdernierspourm'avoirorientéelorsdemonhoixdesujet
dethèse,etpourm'avoirmiseenontataveGilbert etZlil.
J'aiaussiunepenséepartiulièrepourtouslesgensavequi j'aidéouvert leplaisirdefaire
desmaths àplusieurs: dans unjardin, dansune ramede RER, dans unafé,àtable, à4hdu
matinlaveilled'unesupervision,surunoindenappeouuntiketdeaisse,avelesmainsouau
téléphone.DavidetAdamàKing's;Katharinapendantlarédationdenotremémoiredemaîtrise
ommun(surlapreuvedelaonjeturedegéométrisation...endimension1!);ErwanetDimitri
auDEAdelogique; Benoît,Nio,Philippeet sa quête éternellepourladémonstration parfaite
pendantlapréparationàl'agrégation: tousm'ontmontré, preuveàl'appui,queles mathssont
aussiuneativitésoiale!NiolasetXavierseraientaussidansetteliste,s'ilss'étaientorientés
versundomaineraisonnabledesmathématiques. Faute dequoi,nousavonsdûtrouverd'autres
sujetsdeonversation,maisnalementjenesuis pasertained'avoirperduauhange.
Pendant es trois années, j'ai eu le plaisir de toyer plusieurs générations de thésards de
Caen.Je remeriepartiulièrementles vieuxsagesqui m'ontaueilliedanslabande et montré
lesellesdumétierdethésard(àquelleheureallerauRU?àquis'adresserenasdeproblème
informatique? oùtrouverunhier.texàrepiquerpour fairesonprojetprofessionnel?). Mais
jen'oubliepasmesontemporains,ainsiquelajeunegénération.
Etpuisbiensûr,ilyaMar.J'envahissonappartementtroismoisparan,jeassesesustensiles
deuisine,jel'empêhedetravailleretjemonopolisesontéléphone,toutçapourrepartirpendant
six mois sans donner de nouvelles et reommener l'année suivante. Et il supporte ça ave le
sourire.Mes parentsaussi,d'aord. Mais Mar, lui,résout aussimes problèmes deL A

E X. Il a
donétéd'uneaideirremplaçable,maissurtout,sansnosdisussionsàbâtonsrompus,sansnos
humoursaordéset noshorairesdéalés,estroisannéesn'auraientpaseulamêmesaveur.
Je veuxaussiremeriermafamille, àqui je doistout :mesparents,dontlatoléranefae à
mon hoix dearrièreles honore, et Arthur, Dorothéeet Marguerite, qui m'aeptenttelle que
je suismême devantleursamis branhés.Leurseorts répétés pourretenir lesujetde mathèse
mériteune mentionpartiulière.Mais surtout,leursstratégiesvariéesde soutienmoral,qu'elles
soient postales,téléphoniques,théâtrales ou même horégraphiquesm'ont fait passer plusd'un
apdiileavelesourire (voirelefourire).
Enn, poursonsoutieninonditionnelet sapartialitédéidéeàmonégard,jeremerieEran.
Je suis heureused'être nonseulementelle avequi il ahoisi departager savie,mais aussisa
Firstofall,Iwouldliketothankwarmlythetwopeoplewhoguidedandadvisedmeduringthese
three years: Gilbert Levitt and Zlil Sela. Both havebeen very present, and haveshown great
patienein answeringmy manyquestions. Theability ofGilbertto improviseexplanationsand
surveysof whole theoriesonthe blakboardhasoften left melled with wonder. His attention
todetail,andhis tenaityinhelping mesolvemanytehnialproblems havebeenofgreathelp.
Asfor Zlil, he introdued me to his mathematial worldand patientlyrevealed for me someof
thewondersofthisfasinating domain. Hiskindness andsimpliityhavegreatlyontributed to
makemefeelathomefrommyrstdayattheHebrewUniversity.
I would liketo express mygratitude to thereferees, ThomasDelzantand PanosPapasoglu,

I would also like to mention someof the people with whom I sharedthe pleasure of doing

Niolas and Xavier would havemade it into the above list, had they opted for asensible area
ofmathematis. We havethus beenforedto omeupwith otherdisussion topis, but onthe
wholeIamnotsureI regretit.
Duringthese three years, ithas beenmy pleasure to minglewith several generationof PhD
students ofthe University ofCaen. I espeially thankmy elderswhowelomed meand taught
methebasisurvivaltehniquesofaPhDstudent(whattimeisbesttogototheafeteria? who
shouldIturntoregardingomputingissues?). ButIdonotforgetmyontemporaries,aswellas
theyoungergenerations.
And of ourse, there is Mar. I take over his at three months every year, I destroy his
utlery, I prevent himfrom working and I blok his phone line, after whih I disappear for six
month without a word just to turn up again the following year. And Mar graiously bears
it. Right,so domy parents. But Maralso solvesmy L A

Xproblems. His help has thus been
irreplaeable, but more importantly, without our endless disussions, without our tuned sense
ofhumour and ourdesynhronisedshedules,these three years would simplynothavebeen the
same.
I alsowish tothankmyfamily,to whomIoweeverything: my parentsforbeingremarkably
toleranttowardsmydisreputableareerhoie,andArthur,DorothéeandMargueriteforaept-
