"Large C o i l Task" conducted under a n IEA agreement / I / . A p p l i c a t i o n of i n d u s t r i a l d e s i g n and f a b r i c a t i o n methods a s w e l l a s d e m o n s t r a t i o n of r e l i a b l e o p e r a t i o n of l a r g e s u p e r c o n d u c t i n g f u s i o n magnet systems a r e t h e o b j e c t i v e s o f t h i s p r o j e c t . Ac- c o r d i n g t o t h e d e s i g n , c o i l winding (SIEMENS) and c o i l c a s e (KRUPP) were manufactured i n p a r a l l e l and were t h e n assembled t o g e t h e r w i t h t h e o t h e r s u b c o m ~ o n e n t s (SIEMENS).

COIL W I N D I N GThe winding t e c h n i q u e / 2 / , a p p l y i n g c o n t i n u o u s e l e c t r o l y t i c a l c l e a n i n g , 3 l a y e r wrapping w i t h d r y g l a s s t a p e and 50 r e s p . 10 kN winding t e n s i o n t o t h e two hollow c o n d u c t o r s / 3 / i n hand, proved t o be s u c c e s s f u l . The two-conductor p r o c e d u r e allowed f o r e a s y c o n t r o l of l a y e r - t o - l a y e r i n s u l a t i o n (1 kV) d u r i n q winding.
O t h e r p o i n t s o f s p e c i a l e f f o r t s were:

r a d i a l dimensions, f l a t n e s s and mechanical l o a d on d r y i n s u l a t i o n d u r i n g t h e r e - l e a s e o f each double pancake from t h e "odd" D-contour of t h e c o i l former t o t h e f i n a l c o r r e c t shape, e n f o r c e d by t h e i m p r e g n a t i o n mould i n which t h e pancakes were s t a c k e d ( f i g . 1 ) .The complete s t a c k of 7 double pancakes (588 t u r n s , 6.5 km of 1 1 kA c o n d u c t o r ) was s u c c e s s f u l l y impregnated w i t h epoxy r e s i n 141, s o a s t o a c h i e v e a s t i f f , m o n o l i t h i c b l o c k ( f i g . 2 ) . COIL CASEEach h a l f of t h e c o i l c a s e ( f i g . 4 ) i s welded up / 5 / from t h i c k s t a i n l e s s s t e e l ( s s ) m a t e r i a l t y p e 1.4429 ( c o r r e s p o n d i n g t o 316 LN). Plachining was a p p l i e d t o a l l f l a n g e s and t o t h e r e f e r e n c e p l a n e s , b u t n o t t o t h e i n n e r s u r f a c e s , e x c e p t t o t h o s e o f t h e f o r g e d f r o n t p i e c e . About 600 b o r e s f o r p l u g b o l t s and i n s t r u m e n t s had t o be d r i l l e d .

The main a d v a n t a g e s of f i x i n g t h e winding i n s i d e t h e c a s e by i n f l a t i n g 54 ss b l a d - d e r s w i t h f i l l e d epoxy r e s i n a r e :

wide a l l o w a b l e r a n g e of gaps t o b e c l o s e d (1.5 mm t o 15 mm), - s h o r t assembly t i m e and good c o n t r o l of p r o c e d u r e .Torque-"free" t e n s i o n i n g t o g e t h e r w i t h good c o n t r o l of t h e r e q u i r e d h i g h b o l t t e n s i o n were a c h i e v e d by warming t h e b o l t s up t o 280 O C p r i o r t o i n s e r t i n g and m o d e r a t e l y t o r q u i n g , and by c h e c k i n g t h e l e n g t h of a b o u t 10 % of t h e 480 b o l t s i n s i t u / 6 / . Some 500 s e n s o r mounting s o c k e t s , t u b e - c o n n e c t i o n s , f e e d t h r o u g h s and o t h e r s e a l s t o g e t h e r w i t h a b o u t 450 m of w e l d i n g seams ( c o o l i n g c h a n n e l s and l a r g e f l a n g e s e a l s , f i g . 8) have t o be He-leak-tight t o a b o u t 10-8 mbar l / s p e r i t e m , most of them exposed t o 25 b a r i n t e r n a l p r e s s u r e a t 4 K. The t o t a l l e a k a g e o f t h e complete magnet must n o t ex- ceed 5-10-6 mbar l / s . T h e r e f o r e l e a k t e s t i n g was a permanent and c o s t l y a c t i v i t y , ac- companying t h e f a b r i c a t i o n and i n t e g r a t i o n of t h e numerous subcomponents.

CONCLUSIONSo f a r , m a n u f a c t u r i n g o f t h e European LCT c o i l was s u c c e s s f u l , though more time t h a n planned was needed, m a i n l y f o r v e r i f i c a t i o n t e s t i n g , d u r i n g " l e a r n i n g " p h a s e s and f o r q u a l i t y c o n t r o l and i n s t r u m e n t a t i o n , s o t h a t much time c o u l d b e saved w i t h f u t u r e c o i l s . S t a r t o f t h e c r y o g e n i c t e s t s a t t h e KfK f a c i l i t y TOSKA i s i n view f o r t h e 4 t h q u a r t e r o f 1983.
