progressively undermined around the world as ancient enmities rise, to the surface and brother fights brother in an unending slaughter leaving a legacy of hate and destruction in the very heart of the family.

The ensuing carnage has tested the United Nations as never before, and despite our best efforts to save humanity, much more is demanded of us. And so, on World Environment Day 1994, I make a special appeal ,t o you for your prayers,.,and ,your support in order that our effort~ .may succeed n9t only ~n,pu~ting an end to the bloodshed but, more importantly, in inspiring us to a new solidarity and a greater sense of kinship with each other and the earth which nourishes ·us -a l l . i.
