Motivation & Vision

▪ Severe floods in e.g. 2018, 2017, 2016, 2013, 2012, ...

▪ Needs vary by country (1st FANFAR workshop)

▪ A key need for many is operational short- & medium-term hydrological forecasts & alerts that reach the vulnerable populations

Vision:

▪ Efficient flood management in West Africa

▪ Forecasting system operated by regional, national and local

West African institutions &

partners

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme

The FANFAR project Le projet FANFAR

▪ Cooperation since 2012

▪ FANFAR (2018-2020) = Research

& Innovation project financed by European Commission

▪ General aims:

▪ Provide a hydrological

forecasting and alert pilot ICT system for West Africa (1-10 days)

▪ Reinforced cooperation between West Africa and Europe  build system together!

FANFAR objectives

System should be:

▪ Co-designed: working group defining prioritized needs

▪ Co-adapted: jointly modified &

developed according to needs

▪ Integrated: all components working together

▪ Co-operated: jointly operated and maintained

▪ Provide reliable and timely access to information

▪ Robust ICT, relevant for West African conditions (electricity, internet etc.)

▪ Sustainably financed & maintained
