R A D I O N U C L I D E S IN FOOD: WHO GUIDELINES FOR D E R I V E D INTERVENTION LEVELS
The F o r t y - f i r s t W o r l d H e a l t h A s s e m b l y ,
H a v i n g c o n s i d e r e d the r e p o r t of the Director-General"'" on the w o r k of W H O on
guidelines for d e r i v e d intervention levels concerning radioactive c o n t a m i n a t i o n of food;
C o n c e r n e d b y the p o t e n t i a l hazards to h e a l t h due to c o n t a m i n a t i o n of the food supply w i t h radionuclides;
R e c o g n i z i n g the p r o b l e m that such c o n t a m i n a t i o n poses to international trade in food;
A w a r e that the action u n d e r t a k e n b y n a t i o n a l authorities to p r o t e c t the public following the serious nuclear accident in 1986 v a r i e d w i d e l y and c a u s e d considerable public c o n f u s i o n a n d concern;
N o t i n g that m o s t developing countries lack the m e a n s n e c e s s a r y for e v a l u a t i o n and control of radionuclide contamination of their e n v i r o n m e n t and foodstuffs;

CALLS U P O N M e m b e r States to utilize the W H O guidelines for d e r i v e d intervention levels r e g a r d i n g radionuclides in food w h e n developing their own p l a n s and procedures for the p r o t e c t i o n of p u b l i c h e a l t h following a c c i d e n t a l radioactive c o n t a m i n a t i o n of food supplies;
2 . REQUESTS the Director-General:
(1) to continue to cooperate w i t h M e m b e r States in the d e v e l o p m e n t and
s t r e n g t h e n i n g of n a t i o n a l capabilities for the p r o t e c t i o n of p u b l i c h e a l t h following radioactive c o n t a m i n a t i o n of food s u p p l i e s , including the d e v e l o p m e n t of derived intervention levels regarding radionuclides in food on the b a s i s of the
recommendations c o n t a i n e d in the W H O g u i d e l i n e s , and the m o n i t o r i n g of food supplies;
(2) to p r o v i d e support through WHO c o l l a b o r a t i n g centres to M e m b e r States in case of r a d i o l o g i c a l emergencies and in the p r e p a r a t i o n of p l a n s a n d p r o c e d u r e s for dealing w i t h such emergencies;

(3) to intensify c o l l a b o r a t i o n w i t h other relevant i n t e r n a t i o n a l organizations and a g e n c i e s , such as I A E A , FAO and U N E P , in e s t a b l i s h i n g c a p a b i l i t i e s for the rapid exchange of information during emergencies and for r a d i a t i o n m o n i t o r i n g during n o r m a l and e m e r g e n c y c o n d i t i o n s , and in h a r m o n i z i n g approaches to m e a s u r e a n d c o n t r o l r a d i o a c t i v e c o n t a m i n a t i o n for the p r o t e c t i o n of p u b l i c h e a l t h .
