First Geography Lesson : THE GLOBAL GOALS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (GGSD) VOCABULARY

GEOGRAPHY DEFINITIONS NOUNS VERBS ADJECTIVES

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT INDEX ( HDI):

Produced by the United Nations Development Programme ( UNDP) using indicators of life expectancy, knowledge and standards of living to give a value between 0 and I for each country. A high value shows a higher human development

GNI: Gross National Income is a good indication of a country’s wealth. It is the income in US dollars from goods and services in a country for one year, including income from overseas.

LIFE EXPECTANCY: The average age that a child born today is expected to live, if mortality levels of today last throughout its lifetime. It is a measure of the overall quality of life.

ILLITERACY: The percentage of all adults (over 15 years) who cannot read or write simple sentences. High rates of illiteracy can impede economic development.

GENDER INEQUALITY INDEX: Like the HDI, the GII uses the same UNDP indicators but gives a value between 0 and 1 to measure the social and economic differences between men and women. The higher the value, the more equality exists between men and women.

URRBAN POPULATION: The urban population shows the percentage of the total population living in towns and the cities.
