Increase

sustainability of small size sheep farmers from mountains Promote a sustainable land use in peri-urban area

A project to enhance the multifunctionality of farming at the regional level

which connects the city of Claira(Perpignan area), and pastoralists of Canigou (2 hours drive)

A twin goal:

- convert wastelands to cultivated plots through

agro

ecological

practices,

promote

diversificated farming into lowland area

- Improve feed autonomy of mountain pastoral

farming

In the mountains:

In piedmont area: livestock farming prevents reforestation, maintains open areas in touristic high value landscapes and maintains economic and social activity

In alpine grassland grazing reduces the risk of avalanche

But farmers face economic difficulties. Access to lowland areas allow them to grow their feed and grain for the winter

a succession of actions carried out by local actors to maintain biodiversity

The city council hired a facilitator for landowning issues 7 breeders engage in the project (80 to 200 ewes)

land under abandonment are made available to grow forages under agro-ecological practices

a cooperative is created between sheep farmers to get the cultivation and harvesting equipment

returning to farming of 100 hectares of fallowland allow feed autonomy for 7-10 pastoral farms .

An heavy investment in equipment for small farmers A facilitator for land access is needed

Diversity and mesh plots to the local scale

Visible actions on the territory, of local interest that foster new relationships between inhabitants

In lowlands,

- viticulture is declining - Land speculation

- 40% of fallow land on Claira - Biodiversity loss

Return to culture of fallow lands allows to keep in agriculture lands, to enhance

biodiversity at landscape level.

The recognition of the multifunctionality of livestock farming by stake holders in lowlands allows to consider the development of complementarily projects between mountains and lowlands at regional level.

In this situation, increasing feed autonomy for mountain rely on a governing device involving a wide range of stakeholders. Such a project can generate new farming and territorial dynamics

The Fricato project is funded by ministry of agriculture though Casdar project to enhance agro-ecology through collective actions . The research is funded by OBS-TAE project and Arimnet ( Climmed project)
