Abstract - When the Raman intensity of vibrations v of pyridine adsorbed on silver electrodes is scanned versus the potential of the electrode, characteristic maxi- ma are observed. The potentials U at which these maxima occur depend on the exci- ting laser photon energy "hw. /l/.
vThis has been explained by a photon stimulated charge transfer excitation of an electron from the silver into an empty orbital of pyridine / l / , probably at sites of atomic_scale_roughness III. The U - ~hw, rela- tion depends on the counter ions (Cl~, SO^j, SCN", Br") which we tentatively assign to differences in the local electrostatic potential at the surface.
In the same sense, the U
v- -hoi, relation for cyanide adsorbed on a silver elec- trode points to a photon stimulated charge transfer excitation of an electron from CN" to empty silver states.
The implications of this model are discussed with respect to experimentally observed frequency (and intensity) variations of the CN stretch vibration upon electrode potential variations.
