THE ALBERTA UNIFORM BUILDING STANDARDS ACT

Exemption Regulation

1

If a building, material, equipment, protection device or appliance,

or any class thereof, is included in the Schedule or meets the requirements

of the Schedule that apply to the building, material, equipment, protection

device or appliance, or class thereof, it is exempt from the provisions

of regulations to the extent set out in the Schedule.

(2) A manufacturer of cellulose fibre "insulation who wishes insulation

manufactured by him to be exempt from the provisions referred to in

subsection

(1)

shall

(a) permit samples of his insulation to be taken by

a

testing agency,

i ndependant of the manufac_turer, to perform any tests required to show

whether the insulation complies with subsections

(4)

and

(5),

and

(b) have the results of tests submitted to the Director of Building

Standards.

Samples for testing shall be selected at random by a representative

or designate of the testing agency either at the manufacturer's pl ant o·r at

any location where the product is being stored or installed.

Subject to subsection

(5),

rating of not more than 25 but not more than 20% greater than the rating

of an unaged specimen, and

(c)

shall comply_with the limits for corrosiveness.

The testing referred to in subsection

testing agency at intervals not exceeding

Building Standards

is

satisfied

on

the basis

of the

test results that the cellulose fibre insulation tested

(a) substantially complies with the requirements

of

subsections

(4)

and

manufacturer

that

class of cellulose

-fibre insulation is, or continues to be exempt, from the provisions

referred to in subsection (1), or

(b) does not substantially comply with the requirements of subsections (4)

. and (5) he shall notify" the manufacturer that that class of cellulose

fibre insulation is not, or ceases to be, exempt from the provisions

referred to in subsection

(J).

2(1) Subj.ect to subsections {2) to (8) doors .are exempt from the provisions

of Article 3.1.6.4. and Sentence 3.1.15.1.(2) of the Alberta Building Code 1978.

(2) A door manufacturer who wishes doors manufactured by him to be exempt

from the provisions referred to ·in subsection (1) shall

(a) permit samples of his doors to be taken to be tested by a testing

agency, independant of the manufacturer, to determine whether the

doors substantially comply with the appropriate fire protection rating

standard referred to in Subsection 3 .. 1.7. of the Alberta Building tode 1978,

and

{b) have the results of the tests submitted to the Director of Building

Standards.

(3) Samples for testing shall be selected at random by a representative or

designate of the testing agency either at the manufacturer's plant or at

any location \·Jhere the product is be.ing stored or installed.

(4) Subject

~o

subsection (7), the testing referred to in subsection (2)

shall be repeated by the testing agency. at intervals not exceeding 12 months.

(5) The duration of test under subsections (2) and (4) shall not be less

than twenty minutes and the door sample shall conform to the standard referred

to in subsection (2) continuously throughout that period.

(6) If the Director of Building Standards is satisfied on the basis of the

test results that the door sample tested

(a) substantially complies with the standard referred to in

subsection· (2) he shal 1 notify the manufacturer that that cl ass of

door is, or continues to be, exempt from the provisions referred

to in subsection

(1)3

or

(b) does not substantially comply with the standard referfed to in

subsection (2) he shall

notif~

the manufacturer that that class of

door is not, or ceases to be, exempt from the provisions referred to

in subsection (1).

-(7) If a manufacturer has been notified under subsection (6)(a), subsection (4)

does not apply to that class of door if the manufacturer

(a) retains the testing agency to monitor the production of that class

of door, and

(b) labels the doors in that class to indicate that they belong to

that class.

(8) In this section,

{a) "door" means a door that is not more than 2200 mm in height and

not more than 1000 rrun in width;

(b) "class of door" means doors manufactured by a manufacturer that,

due to their method

of

construction, materials or qualities, have

substantially similar fire protection ratings.

If the fire-resistance rating of a reinforced

co~crete

column is not

required by the Alberta Building Code 1978 to be greater than 2 hours, it

is

exempt from the provision in Supplement No. 2 to the.National Building.

Code of Canada, "Fire-Performance Ratings 1975", that requires that wire·

mesh with

0.062-in.-diam~

wire and 4-in. by 4-in. openings must be in-stalled

in the concrete cover.

(B) NUMBERING SYSTEM

. In the decimal system us~d in the Code the first number indicates the Part, the second number indicates the Section of the Part, the third number indicates the Subsection of the Section, and the fourth number indicates the Article of the Subsection.

An Article may be further divided into Sentences, which are indicated by numbers in parentheses, and the Sentences may be flirther divided into Clauses, which are indicated by lower case letters in parentheses, and Subclauses, which are indicated by roman numerals in parentheses.

PART 1. DEFINITIONS. Throughout the Code certain words are underlined. These words are defined in Part 1. A list of abbreviations is included in Part 1.

PART 3. USE AND OCCUPANCY. This Part·contains requirements pertaining to fire <;afety and heJlth, ~1hich depend on the use to which a building is put. The first Section sets out the occupancy classi-fi cci ti on sys tern and explains so111e fundamenta 1 concept~ concerned with fire safety. The following Sections detail specific requirements for fire safety in the building as a whole and on specific areas of the building, requiY"ements for exits and service spaces and

conclude with heal th requirements. Other important features of

Part 3 .:ire those dealing with safety requirements in tall buildings and the provisions included to render certain buildings accessible to physically disabled persons.

SUPPLEMENT NO. 2. FIRE PERFORMANCE l~l\TINGS. This supplement is a guide• to the development of fin~-resistance r<1ting of assemblies of ~wnerically described materiuls 1·1hen specific tests are not av<Ji lJble.

SUPPLEMENT NO. 5. BUILDING STl\NDl\RDS FOR THE HANDICAPPED. This

supplement provides information concerning features of the building design which have to be incorporated to permit access and use by the physically disabled.

PART 4. DESIGN. This Part is concerned with the structural design

requirements for buildings. The Sections of this Part are ·concerned with the loads to which a building may be subjected,

foundation design, specific materials such as wotid, masonry, concrete, steel and aluminum, and the materials used to clad a building.

PLAIN AND REINFORCED MASONRY. This sets out design criteria for use when designing buildings in which plain and reinforced masonry are used.

PART 5. MATERIALS. This Part gives some general statements concerning

materials and sets forth the conditions under which materials, not specifically referenced, can be considered.

PART 6. 13UI LDING SERVICES. This Part is concerned with the safe functioning of building services. In the case of boilers and pressure vessels. electrical facilities, oil and gas burning i:!ppli,111ces, elev.:itors, dumbwaiters and escalators it ·references

ALBERTA HEATING, VENTILATING AND AIR-CONDITIONING CODE 1978. This

Code applies to the design and installation of heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems in buildings regulated by Part 3 of

the Alberta Building Code 1978. Design and approval of.the

'appliances in the S)'.Stem falls under other Acts and Regulations which are referred to in the Code.

PART 7. PLUMBING. This Part references The Plumbing and Drainage

Act and Regulations made pursuant thereto for the requirements for plumbinQ systems.

PART 8. CONSTRUCTION SAFETY MEASURES. This Part sets out the

pre-cautions that must be obser:ved to ensure safety for the public in the vicinity of a construction site. It is stressed that this Part is not meant to restrict or replace safety regulations made pursuant to The Occupational Health and Safety Act.

PART 9. HOUSING AND SMALL BUILDINGS. This Part gives detailed requirements for the construction of houses and small buildings up to 600 m2 in building area and up to 3 storeys in building

height. It does not apply to assembly, institutional and high hazard industrial occupancy buildings. This Pa1·t references many other Parts of the Code and many standards.

METRIC SPAN TABLES FOR \.JOOD JOISTS, RAFTEllS AND BE/IMS. This document, referenced in Part 9, is reprinted following Part 9 as it is useful for checking the adequacy of these components of a wood frame building.

PART 10. RELOCATABLE INDUSTRIAL HOUSING. This Part provides some

specific modifications of other Parts of the Code and recognizes the particular requirements of this class of building. It is emphasized that it does NOT replace· or waive requirements of other Parts except for the specific areas covered.

PART 11. CLIMATIC DATA FOR BUILDING DESIGN IN ALBERTA. This Part sets out climatic data involverl in l.iuilding design, such as

te111perature, wind forces, rainfall and snowfall. Unless a.

SECTION 1.1 SHORT TITLE

jsUBSECTION 1.1.1. This Code may be cited as the "Alberta Building Code 1978".

SECTION 1.3 DEFINITIONS OF WORDS AND PHRASES

SUBSECTION 1.3.1. For definition of words used in this Code that are not

included in this Part. reference should be made to Websters Third New Inter-national Dictionary.

SUBSECTION 1.3.2. The words and terms in italics in this Code have the following meanings:

Access to exit (see exit, access to).

Adfreezin~ means the adhesion of soil to a foundation unit resulting from ·the freezing of soil water. (Also referred to as "frost grip.")

Air-supported structure means a structure consisting of a pliable membrane wh1ch achieves ancrniiifntains its shape and support by internal air pressure. Alarm signal means a signal indicating an emergency requiring immediate action such as an alarm for fire from a manual box, a water flow alarm, an alarm from an automatic fire alarm system or other emergency signal. Allowable bearing pressure (see bearing pressure, allowable).

Allowable lead (see load. a11gwab1e).

All_Q.Y.'ed zinc means an alloy of zinc having the corrosion resistance and physfcal properties of an alloy containing O. 15 per cent titanium,

74 per cent copper and 99.11 per cent zinc and so tempered as to be capable of being for111ed into the sha.pe required for a watertight joint.

Alteration means a change or extension to any matter or thing or to any occupancy regulated by this Code.

Appliance means a device to convert fue1 into energy, and include all components, controls, wiring and piping required to be part of the device by the applicable standard referred to in this Code.

Approved means acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction and, in addition where appropriate, to the fire authority.

Artesian groundwater (see groundwater, artesian).

Assembly occupancy means the occupancy or the use of a building, or part . thereof, by a gathering of persons for civic, political, travel, religious, social, educational, recreational or like purposes, or for the consumption of food or drink. ·

Attic or roof space means the space between the roof and the ceiling of the top storey or between a dwarf wall and a sloping roof.

Authority having jurisdiction means an inspector appointed pursuant to Section 2 of The A1berta Uniform Building Standards Act.

Bachelor dwelling unit means a dwe11 ing unit for 1 or 2 adults with or

w1thout 1 bedroom. .

Bedroom means any room or space primarily intended for sleeping purposes in a building_.

Bearing pressure, a 1i owab le (as applying to foundations) means the maximum pressure that may be safe 1y app 1 i ed to a son or rock by the foundation unit considered in design under expected loading and subsurface conditions.

-Bearing surface means the contact surface between a foundation unit and the soil or rock upon which it bears.

Boiler means an ~liance intended to supply hot water or steam for space heating, processing or power purposes.

Breeching means a flue pipe or chamber for receiving flue gases from 1 or more flue connecti ans and for discharging these gases through a single flue connection.

Building means any structure used or intended for supporting or sheltering any use or occupancy.

Building area means the greatest horizontal area of a building above grade within the outside surface of exterior walls or within the outside surface of exterior walls and the centre line of firewalls.

Build-1B9__f_ace, exposinq (see exposing building face).

Chimney means a primarily vertical shaft enclosing at least 1 flue for

conducting flue gases to the outdoors.

-Chimney, factory-built means a chimney consisting entirely of factory-made parts, edch designed to be assembled with the other without requiring fabrication on site.

Chimney 1 iner means a conduit containing a chimney flue used as a lin{ng of a masonr· or concrete chimney.

Chimney, masonrv or concrete means a chimney of brick, stone, concrete or

approved masonry units constructed on site.

-Chirnne.l_, metal means a single-wall chimney of metal constructed on site .

.D!l~~j_r:i_g_, exterior means those components of a building which are exposed to the outdoor environment and are intended to provide protection against wind, water or vapour.

Closure means ci device for shutting off an opening through a construction ass-eiilGTy, such as a door or a shutter, and inc 1 udes a 11 components such as hardware, closing devices, frames and anchors.

Combustible (as appiying ~o an elementary building material) means that

such material fails to conform to ULC-5114-75, "Standard Method of Test for Determination of Non-Combustibility in Building Materials".

Combustible construction means that type of construction that does not meet the requirements for noncombustible constructfon.

Constructor means a person or fi-rrn who contracts with an owner or his authorized agent to undertake a _project, and includes an owner who contracts with more than one person for th_e work on a project or undertakes the work on a project or any part thereof.

Dead load means the weight of all permanent structural and nonstructural components of a building.

Deep foundation means a foundation unit that provides support for a building by transferring loads either by end-bearing to a soil or rock at considerable depth below the building, or by adhesion or friction, or both, in the soil or rock in which it is placed. Piles are the most common type of _deep fOUiidation.

-Design bearing pressure (see bearing pressure, design). Designer means the person responsible for the design. Design load (see load, design).

Dwelling unit means (a) a room,

(b) a suite of rooms, (c) a mobile home, or (d) a building

operated as a housekeeping unit used or intended to be used by one or more persons and usually containing cooking, eating, living, sleeping and sanitary facilities.

Enclosed walkway (see walkway, enclosed).

Excavation means the space created by the removal of soil, rock or fill for the purposes of construction.

Exhaust duct ~eans a duct through which air is conveyed from a room or space to the outdoors.

Exit means that part of a means of egress that 1 eads from the floor area it s-erves, including any doorway leading directly from a floor area, to a public thoroughfare or to an approved open space.

Exit, access to means that part of a means of egress within a floor area ·that provides access to an exit serving the floor area.

Exit, horizontal means that type of exit connecting 2 floor areas at sub-stantially the same level by means o=ra--doorway, vestibule, bridge or balcony, such flo'or areas being located either in dffferent buildings or located in the same building and fUlly separated from each other by a firewall.

Exit level (as applying to Subsection 3.2.6.) means the lowest level in an enclosed exit stairway from which an exterior door provides access to a public thoroughfare or to an approved open space with access to a public thoroughfare at approximately the same level either directly or through a vestibule or exit corridor.

Exit stor~ {as applying to Subsection 3.2.6.} means a storey from which aQ exterior door provides direct access at approximately the same level to a public thoroughfare or to an approved open space with access to a public thoroughfare.

Exposing building face means that part of the exterior wall of a building which faces one direction and is located between ground level and the ceiling of its top storey, or where a building is divided into fire compa~J:.­

ments, the exterior wa11 of a .fire compartment which faces one direction. '

Exterior cladding_ (see cladding, ~xterior).

Factorx-buil t chimn~ (see chimney, factory-bui 1t) .

Farm building means a buildiri_g_ for the housing of ·livestock or the storage or maintenance of equipment or materials or produce associated with the operation of the farm on \'lhich i t is located.

Fill means soil, rock, rubble, industrial waste such as slag, organic material or a combination of the.se that is transported and placed on the natural surface of a soil or rock or organic terrain. It may or may not be compacted. - -

-f_~_re aut_hority means, when enforcing subject matters designated by the Fire' Prevention Act, the Fire Commissioner, or a local assistant to the Fire Commissioner authorized by him to act on his behalf with regard to this Code.

Fire compartment means an enclosed space in a building that is separated from all other parts of the building by enclosing construction providing a fire separation having a required fire-resistance rating.

Fire damper means a closure which consists of a normally held open damper installed in an air distribution system or in a wall or floor assembly, and designed to close automatically in the event of a fire in order to mainta"in the integrity of the fire separation.

fire load (as applying to an occupancy) means the combustible contents of a room or floor area expressed in terms of the average weight of combustible materials per unit area, from which the potential heat liberation may be calculated based on the caloric value of the materials, and includes the furnishings, finished floor, wall and ceiling finishes, trim and temporary and movable partitions.

Fire-protection rating means the time in hours or fraction thereof th~t a closure, window assembly or glass block assembly will withstand the passage of flame when exposed to fire under specified conditions of test and performance criteria, or as otherwise prescribed in this Code.

Fire resistance· means the property of a material or assembly to withstand fire or give protection from it; as applied to elements of buildings, it is characterized by the ability to confine a fire or to continue to perform a given structural function, or both.

Fire-resistance ratin[ means the time in hours or fraction thereof that a material or assembly of materials will withstand the passage of flame and the transmission of heat when exposed to fire under specified conditions.

Fire-retardant treated wood means wood or a wood product that has had its surface-burning characteristics such as flame spread, rate of fuel contribution and density of smoke developed, reduced by impregnation with fire-retardant

chemicals. ·

Fire separation means a construction assembly that acts as a barrier

against the spread of fire and may not be required to have a fire-resistance rating or a fire-protection rating.

Fir~ means a draft-tight barrier within or between construction assemblies that acts to retard the passage of smoke and flame;

Fire stop flap means a device intended for use in horizontal assemblies required to have a fire-resistance rating and incorporating protective ce"iling membranes, which operates to close off a duct opening through the membrane in the event of a f"i.re.

Firewall means a type of fire separation of noncombustible construction which subdivides a buildina or separates adjoining buil<lings to resist the spread of fire and which has a fire-resistance rating as prescribed in this Code. and has structural stability to remain intact under fire conditions for the required fire-rated time.

Flame-spread rating means an index or classificatio~ indicating the extent of spread-of-flame on the surface of a material or an assembly of material as determined in a standard fire test as prescribed in this Code.

Floor area means the space on any storey of a building between exterior walls and required fi rewa li s, including the space occupied by interior walls and partitions, but not including exits-and vertical service spaces that pierce the storey.

Flue means an enclosed passageway for conveying flue gases.

Flue collar means the portion of a fuel-fired appliance designed for the attachment of the flue pipe or breeching.

Flue pipe means the pipe connecting the flue collar of an appliance to a chimney.

Foamed plastic means a11 materials which are homogeneous systems comprised of at least two phases, one of which is a continuous polymeric organic material, and a second of which is deliberately introduced for the purpose of distributing a gas in voids throughout the material, thereby achieving a reduction in density of the base material. Examples include but are not limited to phenolic foam, po1yisocyanurate foam, polystyrene foam, polyure-thane foam, polyvinyl chloride foam and ureaformaldehyde foam.

Foamed plastic interior_-1'.rilTI_ means foamed lastic products with a density of at least 320 kgim:ril9.98 lb/cu ft used around openings or on walls and ceilings, including casing, baseboards, chair rails, and moldings applied for decoration.

Forced-air furnace (see furnace, forced-air).

Foundation means a system or arrangement of foundation units through which the loads from a building are transferred to supporting soil or rock. Foundation, deep (see deep foundation).

Foundation, shallow (see ~i allow foundation).

Foundation unit means one of the structural members of the foundation of a building such as a footing, raft or .2.i._k.

Frost action means the phenomenon that occurs when water in soil is subjected to freezing wl)ich, because of the water ice phase change or ice lens · growth, results in a total volume increase or the build-up of expansive forces und~r confined conditions or both, and the subsequent thawing that leads to loss of soil strength and increased compressibility.

Furnace means a space-heating app1_"!_9_nce u·sing warm water air as the heating medium and usually having provision for the attachment of ducts.

Furnace, forced-air means a furnace equipped with a fan that provides the primary means for circu1ation of air.

Garage, repair means a buil di_D.£L or part thereof where faci 1 iti es are provided for the repair or servicing of motor vehicles.

Garage, storage means a building or part thereof intended for the storage or parking of motor vehicles and which contains no provision for the repair or servicing of such vehicles.

Gas vent (as applying to heating or cooling systems) means that portion of a venting system designed to convey vent gases vertically to the outside air from the vent connector of a gas-fired appliance, or directly from the appliance •/'/hen a vent connector is not used, and includes any offsets. Grade (as ·applying to the determination of building height) means the average level of finished ground adjoining a building at all exterior

walls, as determined by the authority having jurisdiction (see storey,

first). ·

Ground1~at_gr_ means a free standing body of water 'in the ground.

Groundwater level (groundwater table) means the top surface of a free standing body of water in the ground.

Groundwater, perched means a fre-e standing body of water in the ground extending to a limited depth.

Guard means a protective barrier around openings in floors or at the open sides of stairs, landings, balconies, m1.:zzanines, galleries, raised walkways or other locations to prevent accidental falls from one level to another. Such barrier may or may not have openings through it,

Heat detector means a protective device, that can sense (a) an abnormally high air temperature, or

(b) an abnormal rate of heat rise

and on sensing such a condition can automatically initiate a signal indicating the condition. ·

Heavy timber construction means that type of combustible construction in which a degree of fire safety is attained by placing limitations on the sizes of wood structural members and on thickness and composition of wood floors and roofs, by avoidance of concealed spaces under floors and roofs and by use of approved fastenings, construction details and adhesives for structural members.

High hazard industrial occupancy (see industrial occupancy, high hazard). High occupant load means an o~cupant load where the number of persons in a room or floor area is such that the area of floor per person is not more than 1.2 .m2 (12.92 sq ft).

Horizontal exit (see exit, horizontal).

Horizontal service space means a space such as an attic, duct, ceiling, roof or crawl space oriented essentially in a horizontal plane, concealed and generally inaccessible, through which building service facilities such as pipes, ducts and wiring may pass.

Independent central station means a continually supervised station under the control of a company independent of the -~~:i_r:t__~_!:_S_ of the puilding_ to be protected, that conforms with NFPA No. 71-1977, "Standard for the Installation, Maintenance and Use of Central Station Signaling Systems".

Indirect se;vice w~ter heater (see service water heater, indirect). Industrial occupancy means the occu~ or use of a buildi.!J..9. or part thereof for assenibl ing, fabricating, manufacturing, processing, repairing or storing of goods and materials. ·

Industrial occupancy, hiqh hazard (Group F, Division 'l) means an industrial occuparicy containing sufficient quantities of highly combustible and

flammable or explosive materials which, because of their inherent character-istics, constitute a special fire hazard. ·

Industrial occupancy, medium hazard (Group F, Division 2) means an in9ustrial occupancy in which the combustible content is more than 50 kg/m2

(10.24 lb/sq ft) or 1.2 GJ/m2

(105 665.70 Btu/sq ft) of floor area and not classified as high.hazard industrial occupa_!!Sl.

Infirm persons means all fnsitutionalized persons whose age or health is such that they require institutional care or treatment.

Institutional occup~ncy means the occupancy or use of a building or part thereof by persons harboured or detained to receive medical care or treat-ment, or by persons involuntarily detained.

Limiting distance means the distance from an exposing building face towards a property 1 ine. the centre line of a street, 1 ane, public thoroughfare or an imaginary line between 2 buildings on the same property, measured at right angles to the exposing building face.

live load means the load other than dead load to be assumed in the design of the structural members of a building. It includes loads resulting from snow, rain, wind, earthquake and those due to occupancy, including movable partitions.

load, allowable (as applying to foundations) means the maximum load that may be safely applied to a foundation unit considered in design under expected loading and subsurface conditions.

loadbearing (as applying to a building element) means subjected to or designed to carry loads in addition to its own dead load expecting a wall element subjected only to wind or earthquake loads in addition to its own dead load.

load, design (as applying to foundations) means the load applied to a foundation unit and.which is not greater than the allowable load. load, fire (see fire load).

Means of egress means a continuous path of travel provided by a doorway,

halh~ay, corridor, exterior passageway, balcony, lobby, stair, ramp or other egress facility or combination thereof, for the escape of persons from any point in a building, floor area, room or contained open space to a publ 'ic thoroughfare or other apprred open· space. (Means of egress includes exits and access to exits.

Medium hazard industrial occupancy (see industrial occupancy, medium hazard). Mercantile occupancy means the occupancy or use of a building or part

thereof for the displaying or selling of retail goods, wares or merchandise. Metal chimney (see £himney, metal).

Mezzanine means an intermediate floor between the floor and the ceiling of any room or storey.

Mobil~ home means a factory constructed single family detached dwelling unit readily relocatable singly or in double modules.

Noncombustible (as applying to an elementary building material) means that such mater·ial conforms to ULC-5114-75, "Standard Method of Test for Determination of Non-combustibility in Building Materials".

Noncombust·ible construction means that type of construction in which a

degree o-r-fire safefy-1sattained by the use of noncombustible materials

for structural members and other building as semb 1 i es.

Occupancy means the use or intended use of a building or part thereof for the shelter or support of persons. animals or property.

Occupancy, major means the principal occupancy for which a building or part thereof is issued or intended to be used, and shall be deemed to include the subsidiary occupancies which are an integral part of the principa"! occupancy.

Occupant load means the number of persons for 1~hich a building or part thereof is designed .

the event of a disaster, and includes hospitals, fire stations, police stations, radio stations, telephone exchanges, power stations, e1ectricii1 substations, pumping stations (1~ater .and sewage} and fuel depot buildings. Return duct means a duct for conveying air from a space being heated, ventilated or conditioned back to the heating, ventilating or

air-conditioning appliance. ·

Rock means that portion of the earth's crLlst which is consolidated, coherent and relatively hard and is a naturally formed, solidly bonded, mass of mineral matter which cannot readily be broken by hand.

Sanitary drainage system means a drainage system that conducts sewage. Separatfon, ff re (see fire separation).

Service room means a room or space provided in a building to accommodate building service equipment such as air-conditioning or heating appliances, electrical services, pumps, compressors and incinerators.

Service space means a space provided in a building to facilitate or conceal the insta11ation of building service facilities such as chutes, ducts, pipes, shafts br wires.

Service space, hori zonta 1 (see hori zonta 1 service space). Service space,. vertical (see vertical service space).

Service water heater means a device for heating water for plumbing servkes. Service water heater, indirect means a service water heater that derives its heat from a heating medium such as warm air, steam or hot water. Service water heater, storage type means a service water heater with an integral hot 1·1ater storage tank.

Shallovi foundation means <1 foundation unit which derives its support from soil Ot'. rock located c1ose to the lowest part of the building which it supports.

Smoke alarm means a protective device that is a self-contained unit consisting of an assembly of electricai components, a smoke chamber, and an alarm

sounding appliance and has provision for connection either to a power supply source or to integral batteries.

Smoke detector means a protective device

(a) consisting of a smoke chamber and an assembly of electrical components arranged to detect the presence of either visible or invisible particles produced by combustion and automatically ·initiating a signal indicating this condition,

(b) \~ith provision for connection to

(i) a power supply source by splice leads, and

(ii) one or more signalling circuits, and

(c) which may inc1ude provision for connection to remote control circuits. Soi 1 means that portion of the earth's ·crust which is fragmentary, or such that some individual particles of a dried sample may be readily separated by agitation in water; it includes boulders, cobbles, gravel, sand, silt, clay and organic matter. ·

_Space heater means a space-heating appliance for heating the room or space within which it is located, without the use of ducts.

Space-heating appliance means an app!"iance intended for the supplying of heat to a room or space directly,

a ~ace heater, fireplace or unit heater, or to rooms or spaces of a bu'ilding_ through a heating system such as a central furnace oi· boiler.

~1ered (as applying to a building or part thereof) means that the 01ii1ding or part thereof is equipped with a system of automatic sprinklers.

Stag~ means a space designed primarily for theatrical performances with prov1sion for quick change scenery and overhead lighting, including environmental control for a wide range of lighting and sound effects and which is traditionally, but not necessarily, separated from the audience by a proscenium wa 11 and curtain opening.

Storage garage (see 9arage, storage}.

Storage-type service water heater (see service water heater, storage type}. Storey means that portion of a building which is situated between the top of any floor and the top of the floor next above it, and if there is no floor above it, that portion between the top of such floor and the ceiling above it.

Storey, first means the stor(y with its. floor closest to grade and having its ceiling more than 1.8 m 5.91 ft} above grade.

Stove means an appliance intended for cooking and space heating. Street means any highway, road, boulevard, square or other improved thoroughfare 9 m (29.53 ft) or more in width, which has been dedicated or deeded for public use, and is accessible to fire department vehicles and equipment.

Subsurface investigation means the appraisal of the general subsurface conditions at a building site by analysis of information gained by such

methods as geological surveys,. in situ testing, sampling, visual inspection, laboratory testing of samples of the subsurface materials and groundwater observations and measurements.

Supervisory signal means a signal indicating the need for action in connection with the supervision of sprinkler and other extinguishin~

systems or equipment, or with the maintenance features of other protection systems.

Supply duct means a duct for conveying air from a heating, ventilating or conditioning appliance to a space to be heated, ventildted or air-conditioned.

Theatre means a pl ace of public assembly intended for the production and VTewing of the performing arts or the screening and viewing of motion pictures, and consisting of an auditorium with permanently fixed seats intended solely for a viewing audience.

Thermal barrier means a membrane used to protect a foamed plastic or other combustible material from the effects of heat and flame for a specified period of time.

Unit heater means a suspended space heater with an integral air circulating fan.

Unprotected opening {as applying to exposing building face) means a doorway, window or opening other than one equipped with a closure having the required fire-protection rating, or any part of a wall forming part part of the exposing building face that has a fire-resistance rating less than required for the exposing building face.

Unsafe condition means any condition that could cause undue hazard to life, limb or health of any person authorized or expected to be on or about the premises.

Vent connector (as applying to heating or cooling systems) means the part of a venting system that conducts the flue gases or vent gases from the

.f.l_u~_gij_]_ar of a gas EBPliance to the chimne;L_ or~ vent, and may include a draft control device .

.Y_~rtical-2._~_yice2~~- means a shaft oriented essentially vertically that is provided in a buildin[ to facilitate the installation of building services including mechanical, electrical and plumbing installations and facilities such as elevators, refuse chutes and linen chutes.

Walkway means a covered or roofed pedestrian thoroughfare used to connect 2 or more buildings in which the least horizontal dimension of _the thorough-fare is less than 9 m (29.53 ft).

Walkway, covered means a walkway that has more than 50 per cent of its perimeter open to the outdoors.

Walkway, enclosed means a walkway that has 50 per cent or less of its perimeter open to the outdoors.

Wall,~ means a wall jointly owned and jointly used by 2 parties under easement agreement or by right in law, and erected at or upon a line

separatin~ 2 parcels of land each of which is, or is capable of being, a separate real-estate entity.

1.3.3.1. Words and phrases as defined in The Alberta Uniform Building Standards Act shall be deemed to have the same meaning in this.Code except where a

definition is given in Subsection 1.3.2. 1.3.3.2.(1) In this Code the term

(a) "individually rented" shall be deemed to include individual ownership, such as in a condominium,
