Regret is expressed after you did something you shouldn’t have done or you didn’t do something you should have done .
I.PRESENT REGRET
*I don’t speak Spanish.
I regret not speaking Spanish . I wish I spoke Spanish .
If only I spoke Spanish .
II.PAST REGRET
*He had an accident because he drove too fast.
He should not have driven too fast.
If only he hadn’t driven too fast . He wishes he hadn’t driven too fast .
If he hadn’t driven too fast , he wouldn’t have had an accident.
He regrets having driven too fast.
He oughtn’t to have driven too fast.
He feels sorry for having driven too fast .
STRUCTURE :
*should (not) have + verb in the past participle
*ought (not) to have + verb in the past participle
*If only + past perfect
*wish + past perfect
*conditional type III : [ If + past perfect ] + [would have + past participle]
*regret / regret not + having + past participle
*feel sorry for / feel sorry for not + having + past participle
EXERCISE:
