Relative Pronouns

A relative pronoun is used to connect a clause or phrase to a noun or pronoun. ... The most common relative pronouns are who, whom, whose, which, and that.

Relative pronouns are placed directly after the noun or pronoun they modify. They can refer to subjects as well as objects. For example:

• The driver who ran the stop sign was careless.

• The children, whom we love dearly, need better educations.

• Never go to a doctor whose office plants have died.

• I have a friend whose cat is annoying.

• The book, which is now out of print, has all the information you need.

• This is the book that everyone is talking about.

In each example above, the subject of the sentence is described by a relative clause (italicized). Each clause is introduced by a relative pronoun (in bold).

Who

is used to refer to people

Example: The man who works at the Post Office is very kind.

N.B. Whom replaces who if you’re referring to people as an object of a verb.

Example: The man whom I met in the supermarket is my uncle.

Which

is used to refer to animals and objects

Example: Amy has a bunch of flowers which she bought from the flourist.

Whose

is used to refer to possession.

Example: Whose umbrella is this? / The book whose cover is blue isn’t mine.

Notes

“That” can sometimes replace who, whom and which.

When relative pronouns refer to objects, they can sometimes be omitted.

I like the gift which you gave me. = I like the book you gave me.

Occasionally, the relative adverbs "when" "why" and "where" are also used as relative pronouns. For example:

• Grandma remembers a time when radio shows were popular.

• I want to visit the island where my grandma was born.

In these cases, "when" and "where" introduce clauses that describe a noun the refers to a time or place, making them work as relative pronouns in these sentences.
