Although one's first guide to pronunciation is that a speaRer Of Fijian, from time to time it is necessary to pronounce.mords from the written form. The Fijian spelling system h sullh a high nf C0nSI_5 tenCy Lie

It must be remembered, however, that the relationship between a sound and the letter

However, the dictionary lIsts fewer than 250. ,In 19681 approximately 450 pags of newspaier text were culled for borrowings', and over 500-were Counted, not Including prope1. names. The disparity between the.- numbers shows that it is diffIcult for'beginning students of the language to read.the newspaper with the aid or the-dictionarys,since many of the Fijian spellings seem quite unlike to'English'spurce wordsi and many of Its meanings are rather different in Fijian.
