Congratulations! Following the announcement made at the Intangible Cultural Heritage event held at Voordorp Fort on 13 October, l can now officially announce that the Bloemencorso Zundert (Zundert Flower Parade) has been inscribed in the Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Netherlands.

The independent review committee was very positive about your nomination, and in particular about how strongly the Bloemencorso is embraced by the local community and the activities your foundation organises to keep it viable. This support from the local community is an important condition for inclusion in the Inventory.

What does inclusion in the Inventory mean?

Inclusion in the Inventory is a form of recognition, a stamp that your foundation can display. The Centre is working to develop an official logo and certificate, which will be sent to you in due course. We are also working on an official website which will list all recognised forms of intangible heritage.

Inclusion in the Inventory is not, however, the end goal. The most important objective of the UNESCO Convention is ensuring that intangible heritage remains viable. You have developed a good plan for this, but it will require ongoing care and attention. In particular, professionalisation of the Bloemencorso is an ongoing issue. On the one hand, it means a large-scale, professional event that acts as Zundert’s calling card. On the other, this asks more of the board. But it consists of volunteers, who cannot easily be replaced by professionals as this would change the character of the event. The involvement of volunteers was one of the points that most impressed the committee as it demonstrates the commitment of the community, an important part of intangible cultural heritage. It is a difficult dilemma with potentially serious consequences, either for the size of the event or its voluntary character.

We would like to monitor progress with you, so will be asking you to give an update on the current situation every two years, based on your report setting out the plans and strategies you have in place and the results achieved. You will also be expected to attend regular meetings and follow developments via our magazine Immaterieel Erfgoed.

Last Friday the review committee discussed your proposal for inclusion in the Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Netherlands. In it, you clearly conveyed the local community’s enthusiasm for and commitment to this flower parade.

We are pleased to inform you that the review committee has approved your proposal and that the

Bloemencorso Eelde can be inscribed in the Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Netherlands. We hope that this decision will encourage volunteers and further boost their commitment.

Inclusion in the Inventory is a form of recognition of your tradition. Inscribed ICH communities are awarded a logo, which can be used in all communications. Our designers are currently working on the logo, which you will be sent as soon as it is ready.

Recognition is a means of keeping your tradition viable in the future, rather than an objective in itself. In your proposal you emphasised how the tradition is being passed on to new generations, for example via primary school projects. You also wrote about a survey you wish to conduct together with the Hanze secondary school in Groningen. This is interesting and important work. It is also important to map any obstacles in your way. We would like to monitor progress with you, so will be asking you to complete an evaluation and to give an update on the current situation in two years’ time. For example, have you been successful in attracting ‘voluntary professionals’? And what about your concerns that further professionalisation will ask too much of them?

However, right now this is about your tradition achieving national recognition, and I would like to congratulate you on that. You say that you want to maximise publicity surrounding the inclusion. I suggest coordinating with each other, as we will be publishing our own news item and will be writing to the mayor of Eelde to inform them of our decision. Inclusion in the Inventory will help the Gondelvaart Giethoorn safeguard its heritage.
