Standard facts

Exercise 1. [The unitary trick - (1.14) in [1]] Let V be an irreducible representation of the finite groupG. Show that, up to scalars, there is a uniqueHermitian inner producth, ionV invariant under G:

∀g∈G,∀(x, y)∈V2,hg·x, g·yi=hx, yi

Exercise 2. [(2.34)in [1]] Let V and W be irreducible representations ofGand L0 :V →W be any linear mapping. DefineL:V →W by:

L(v) = 1

|G|

X

g∈G

g−1·L0(g·v)

Show thatL= 0ifV andW are not isomorphic, and thatLis a multiplication by trace(LdimV0) ifW =V.

On the dihedral group

Exercise 3. [(3.7) and (3.8) in [1]] The dihedral group D2n is the group of isometries of a regular n-gon in the plane. It is made of n rotations and n reflections. The purpose of this exercise is to understand the representation theory of this group.

• Method 1: Consider an arbitrary representation V. Notice that Γ, the subgroup of rotations is abelian. The space V breaks up into eigenspaces for the action of Γ. Analyze the action of reflections on these eigenspaces, and explain how to decompose the representationV.

• Method 2: Using character theory, give a character table.

The representation theory of these algebras b n,k (β = q + q − 1 ) is given: their irreducible, standard (cellular) and principal modules are constructed and their structure

Modulo these modes, we see that there is an essentially unique form of invariant metric on G and we have given some conditions for associated moduli of torsion free and cotorsion

From the knowledge of the representation theory of G 4 , it is easy to determine from the infinites- imal data whether the corresponding monodromy representation factorize through

is its group of components ; subgroup will always mean closed subgroup ; and cyclic group will mean a compact Lie group containing an element, called the generator, whose powers
