Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean et la Collection Pinault ont le plaisir d’annoncer leur collaboration dont l’ambition est d’offrir au public un regard sur leurs collections d’art contemporain.
La première présentation se tiendra dans le jardin des sculptures du Mudam, du 20 avril au 25 août 2019, avec un groupe d’œuvres emblématiques du dano-vietnamien Danh Võ, artiste, dont plusieurs œuvres significatives font partie de la Collection Pinault. Suzanne Cotter, directrice du Mudam s’est réjouie du projet : « Le Mudam est ravi de cette nouvelle collaboration avec la Collection Pinault, qui est indiscutablement l’une des plus importantes collections d’art contemporain en Europe. Grâce à cette conversation dynamique et intellectuellement généreuse, le Mudam souhaite offrir à ses divers publics un contexte élargi pour apprécier les œuvres des artistes majeurs de notre temps, et d’introduire une vision ambitieuse de ce qu’une collection d’art contemporain pourrait être. » Cette conversation, entre les deux collections, a été conçue en étroite concertation avec Danh Võ et Caroline Bourgeois, conservatrice auprès de la Collection Pinault. Le directeur général de Pinault Collection, Jean-Jacques Aillagon, s’est également exprimé : « Je me réjouis que la Collection Pinault et le Mudam, institution pour laquelle j’ai beaucoup d’estime, engagent une collaboration que j’espère longue et fructueuse. Ce sont, par ailleurs, de très anciens souvenirs qui me rattachent au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg, raison de plus pour me féliciter de cette initiative croisée à laquelle Monsieur François Pinault a souhaité apporter personnellement son soutien. »

The Mudam Collection and Pinault Collection in dialogue in Luxembourg

Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean and Pinault Collection are delighted to announce their collaboration which will offer the public greater insight into their contemporary art collections.
A first presentation will be displayed in Mudam’s Sculpture Garden, from 20 April to 25 August 2019, with a selection of emblematic works by the Danish-Vietnamese artist Danh Võ from Pinault Collection. Suzanne Cotter, director of Mudam, expressed her enthusiasm for the project: “Mudam is delighted with the collaboration with Pinault Collection, which is undoubtedly one of the most important collections of contemporary art in Europe. Thanks to this dynamic and intellectually generous conversation, Mudam will be able to offer its many visitors a broader context in which to appreciate the works of some of the most signifiant artists of today, and offer an ambitious vision of what a contemporary art collection might be.”
This conversation between the two collections is the result of close consultation with Danh Võ and Caroline Bourgeois, curator of Pinault Collection. The director general of Pinault Collection, Jean- Jacques Aillagon stated: “I am delighted that Pinault Collection and the Mudam, an institution for which I have the greatest respect, are engaging in a cooperative venture which I hope will be long- lasting and fruitful. My links with and memories of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg go back a long way, a further reason to take pleasure in this joint initiative, to which Mr François Pinault also wishes to lend his personal support.”

Biographie
Danh Võ, né en 1975 à Bà Ria au Vietnam, vit et travaille à Mexico DF, Mexique.
À travers des œuvres inspirées à la fois par ses propres expériences et par des événements historiques et politiques, Danh Võ interroge la manière dont les valeurs culturelles, les conflits et les traumatismes résultent de constructions et d’héritages. Lorsqu’il était encore enfant, Danh Võ et sa famille ont fui le Vietnam pour venir s’installer au Danemark. L’assimilation de sa famille à la culture européenne ainsi que les événements politiques qui ont précipité ce départ du Vietnam nourrissent sa pratique artistique ; son travail expose les multiples éléments entrelacés entre l’expérience intime et l’histoire collective qui façonnent notre individualité. Par le recours à la fois à des objets ready-made historiquement chargés et à des données personnelles touchant directement ou indirectement à son propre vécu, l’artiste examine les multiples ramifications produites par l’inconstance des significations selon le contexte et aussi la façon dont les objets eux-mêmes accumulent une charge symbolique. Le travail de Danh Võ est à la fois énigmatique et poétique.
Tout en évitant habilement de tomber dans le didactisme, il interroge les structures du pouvoir sous-jacentes de nos sociétés libérales, la fragilité des états-nations et la manière dont les objets conservent ou absorbent le désir et la tristesse sublimés des individus et de cultures entières.
Conçues au sein d’un processus de travail qui allie des phases de recherche avec des rencontres fortuites et des négociations intimes délicates, les installations de Danh Võ rendent manifestes les subtilités latentes et les souvenirs enfouis dans des formes familières.
Danh Võ a étudié à l’Académie royale des beaux-arts du Danemark (Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi) et à la Stadelschule de Francfort. En 2012 il reçoit le prix Hugo Boss (New York) ; en 2007 il est récompensé à Berlin en Allemagne par le BlauOrange Kunstpreis der Deutschen Volksbanken und Raiffeisenbanken à Berlin, Allemagne. En 2015, le travail de Danh Võ fut présenté lors de la 56e édition de la Biennale de Venise, au Pavillon Danois. Il a notamment été le commissaire de l’exposition de la Collection Pinault, Slip of the Tongue, à la Punta della Dogana (Italie).
Par ailleurs, son œuvre fut également présentée lors de nombreuses expositions collectives, notamment au Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, à l’occasion de l’exposition L’Image papillon (23.03 - 08.09.2013), qui s’intéressait aux relations complexes qui lient l’image et la mémoire.

Biography
Born in 1975 in Bà Ria, Vietnam lives and work in Mexico DF, Mexico.
Danh Võ examines how cultural values, conflicts and traumas are constructed and inherited through work inspired both by his own experiences as well as historical and political events. When he was a child, Võ’s family fled Vietnam and settled in Denmark. His family’s assimilation to European culture and the political events that precipitated their flight from Vietnam are intertwined in his artistic practice; Võ’s work illuminates the interwoven strands of private experience and collective history that shape our sense of self. Using both historically rich readymade objects and personal details that directly and indirectly touch on his own life experiences, Võ examines the larger implications how meaning changes with context, as well as how objects accumulate symbolic weight. Võ’s work is both enigmatic and poetic, deftly avoiding didacticism as he explores the power structures underlying liberal societies, the fragility of the nation-state, and the way objects retain or absorb the sublimated desire and sadness of individuals and entire cultures. Emerging from a process of research, chance encounters, and delicate personal negotiations, Võ’s installations unearth the latent undertones and memories embedded in familiar forms.
Danh Võ studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Denmark and the Städelschule, Frankfurt.
In 2012 he was the winner of the Hugo Boss Prize, New York; the BlauOrange Kunstpreis der Deutschen Volksbanken und Raiffeisenbanken in Berlin, Germany in 2007.
In 2015 Danh Võ work’s was present in Venice at the Danish Pavilion of the 56th Biennale. The same year, he curated Pinault Collection’s exhibition Slip of the Tongue at the Punta della Dogana.
His work has also been exhibited in many collective exhibitions. In 2013, his work was shown as part of the exhibition Image papillon at Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, which explored the complex relations between image and memory.

La Collection Mudam
La Collection Mudam est la plus importante collection d’art contemporain au Luxembourg.
D’envergure internationale, elle réunit près de 700 œuvres d’artistes luxembourgeois et du monde entier, tous mediums confondus. Une petite partie de la collection s’attache également à la mode et au design. Plus de 54 œuvres ont été commandées par le Mudam, dont beaucoup ont été conçues en réponse à l’architecture de Ieoh Ming Pei. La Fondation Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean ayant été créée en 1998, la collection s’est construite dès les années 1990 en vue de l’ouverture du musée en 2006. Si les années 1960 sont un repère historique dans l’histoire de l’art contemporain, la majorité des œuvres de la collection date de 1980 à aujourd’hui.
Pinault Collection
La Collection Pinault réunit un ensemble de près de cinq mille œuvres, couvrant aussi bien le XXe siècle que le siècle actuel. La démarche de François Pinault se nourrit d’une volonté de partager sa passion avec le plus grand nombre, d’un engagement durable envers les artistes et d’une exploration permanente des nouveaux territoires de la création. Depuis 2006, le projet culturel de François Pinault est orienté autour de trois axes : une activité muséale à Venise, au Palazzo Grassi et à la Punta della Dogana, et bientôt à Paris à la Bourse de Commerce, un programme d’expositions
« hors les murs » et le développement d’initiatives en faveur de la création artistique et de la promotion de l’histoire de l’art.

The Mudam Collection
The Mudam Collection is the most important collection of contemporary art in Luxembourg.
Resolutely international in its scope and ambition, the collection’s holdings consist of close to 700 works of art in all media by artists from Luxembourg and around the world. A small nucleus of the collection consists of fashion and design objects. Over 54 works are the result of commissions by Mudam for its distinctive architectural context. The constitution of the collection traces back to the first acquisitions for the museum in the 1990s, the creation of the Museum of Modern Art Grand- Duc Jean Foundation in 1998, and the opening of the Museum in 2006. While the decade of the 1960s serves as an historic point of reference for contemporary art, the majority of works in the collection currently date from 1980’s to the present.
Pinault Collection
Pinault Collection consists of almost five thousand works, covering both the 20th and 21st centuries.
François Pinault has been driven by a desire to share his enthusiasm with as many people as possible, a lasting commitment to the artists concerned and a constant curiosity about new areas of creativity. Since 2006 his cultural project has had three main thrusts: working with museums (Palazzo Grassi and the Punta della Dogana in Venice, and soon the Bourse de Commerce in Paris), a programme of “offsite” exhibitions, and initiatives to foster artistic creativity and promote art history.
