The Economic Commission for Africa

Having examined the report .of' the Workshop on Extension of Family and Child Welfare Servicefl within the Community Development Programmes

(E!CN.14I79) and theCammiasianI S Programme of Work

Priori ties in the field of Comr.nmity Development (E/cN.1J.!87);

Bearing in Mind the importance of Illsintai ning a balance between social and economic developnent in national planning programmeej

Expresses its appreciation of the helpful contribution which the Workshop has made to the 8tUdy of thi s sUbject;

Approves the recommendation that the Commission set up a standing commi ttee on eccf.aL welfare and communi,ty development; and

Requests the Executive Secretary to set up a standing committee of experts in these fields from African States to study social welfare services, community development programmes (including economic aspects), social aspects of urbanization (including housing) training of personnel

and the interdependence of the services in the establishment of national social development programmes in the hfrican countries;

Instructs the committee to convene annually prior to the Commission1s plenary session at the same place of meeting; and to present recommendations in the above fields to the Commission at its plenary session.
