8. Al~ost all African coun~ries will have established decennial population census programmes and many will be actively developing or screngchening proqra~~es of continuina household surveys as well as initiacing experimeneal proqram~es for ehe improvemene of ~heir

Review of naGional praccices in de~ographic and soeio-economic daca collect-ion. process ina analysis and appL'i c at i.on will have been carried oue, recom~endations ~Rde and programmes for filling daea gaps will be in proqress in a number of African courrcri as . A number of couneries in the reqion will have e~barked on ~ollect-ing environ~en~ s~a~is~ics as par~ of ~h~i.r reqular s~a~is~ical

capabili~ies will need ro be developed ~uch fur~her in ord~r ~o

supply adequace environmental infor~a~ion ~o planners.

9. The reaional s~~~i~(.ical oat-a base will have been co~pucerized

and furcher developed. It will have been expanded t-o con~ain dace on environ~enc s~a~is~ies, wi~h par~i~ular e~phasis on drouqht and desertification and on natural resources. However . rhe full developrnent ot this d~ta base which has in the uase been hampered by the f inanei a1 cri sis of rhe Uni r..ed Na '(ions wi11 depend on available resources and on ~he Quantic¥ and qua~lty of data originating from national and subregional support-ing cent-res. It- is eheir qrow~h which will therefore larqely de~errnine the scope and adequacy of the daca base at tne ~eqional level.

10. The 15 staris tLc a L t.ra Ln i.no ce ntr-es oarci cioet Lno in the Statistical Training Programme for Africa (STPA) . will have trained approximately 700 professional and middle level stat-isticians a year. Some 20 ~rainers involved in ~iddle-level/in-service

training proqram~es will have been crained throuqh workshops . In spite of this, the demand for trained scatistical personnel will not have been satisfied. Post-araduate traininq will need to be further st-rengthened and research activicies a~ the centres

i~proved.

11. Studies wjll have been undercaken and recom~enda~ionsmade on national stat-ist-ical da~a processing capability. scaciscical daca base developrnent and the use of sof~ware packaaes in s~a~iscical compu~ing.
