Directory of ECA-sponsored Institutions 1992

Preface

TheDirectory ofECA-sponsored subregional and regional institutions in Africa isa publication of the Pan African Development Information System (PADIS) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. The Directory derives from PADIS' referral data base, PADinst,on research and develop- ment institutions in Africa. The purpose of both the database and its printed product, theDirectory, isto ensure readily available and current information on the capacities of subregional and regional institutions in Africa.

PADIS feels that by providing this information theDirectorycan assist in the sharing within Africa of expertise, experience, know-how and facilities of these institutions. As such it is part of PADIS' contribution to Technical Co-operation among Developing Countries and especially Technical Co- operation between African Countries.

Thisisthe second edition of theDirectory ofECA-sponsored subregional and regional institutions in Africa. The first edition was produced in 1988. At the request of the eleventh meeting of Chief Executives of ECA-sponsored In- stitutions held in Addis Ababa in 1991, this Directorywill now become an annual publication. However, in order to do this, the full co-operation of each ECA-sponsored institution in gathering the necessary data will be required.

This edition contains information on 38 institutions sponsored by the ECA, in fields from advisory services and aerial surveys to wind and water man- agement, located in 21 countries from Algeria to Zambia. The largest concen- tration, with more than 4 institutions in each category, are in regional co-operation technical and economic co-operation, research, management, standardization and training. The highest concentration of institutions is found in Kenya and Nigeria, with five each, and in Ethiopia, which hosts four ECA-sponsored institutions.

I would like to thank everyone who participated in the preparation of the Directory.
