ECA to Facilitate the Establishment of the Intergovernmental Organizations’

Forum in West Africa

ECA Press Release No. 79/2012

Niamey, 28 May 2012 (ECA) - The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Sub-Regional Office for West Africa (UNECA SRO-WA) is organizing a two-day Ad Hoc Expert Group Meeting of West African Intergovernmental Organizations (WAIGOs) to review the implementation of regional integration programmes. The meeting will be held on 4 and 5 June 2012, in Lomé, Togo.

During the meeting, experts will exchange views on regional integration challenges and collaboration among West African intergovernmental organizations, in the context of the ongoing efforts towards the establishment of the WAIGOs’ Forum.

The participants will also develop a roadmap to accelerate the finalization of the remaining processes leading to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) so as to enable WAIGOs to efficiently exploit their synergies, and pool their resources and comparative strengths in addressing regional development challenges.

Equally important is their participation in a roundtable on financing mechanisms for regional integration, which will propose modalities for a sustainable source of operational resources for the Forum.

It is expected that the formalisation of the WAIGOs’ Forum upon the signing of the MOU will provide an entry point for the assistance of development partners intending to work with a broad base of intergovernmental organizations to accelerate regional integration in West Africa. In particular, the United Nations Sub Regional Coordination Mechanism, which seeks to streamline the UN’s delivery of technical assistance to WAIGOs, will use the WAIGOs’ Forum and its programme.

It is to be recalled that discussions facilitated by UNECA SRO-WA on the establishment of the WAIGOs’ Forum, under the leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) Commissions, culminated in the drafting of a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation among

Intergovernmental Organisations in West Africa in 2011.

Participants at the meeting are representatives of the West African IGOs, academic and research institutions, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and other development partners.

The meeting is part of the UNECA’s programme for capacity building and support to developmental efforts in West Africa.
