Text: The Result of Freedom

For some minutes there was a scene of great joy. The slaves fell on the ground and offered thanks to God. Others sang songs and danced with joy. Many looked with pity on their formers owners.

The excitement and happiness of the freed Negroes lasted only for a short time. Before they returned to their houses I noticed a difference in their feelings. Many were thinking about the change in their lives. They now understood that they would have to think and plan for themselves and their children and would have to depend on their own work. They felt like a boy of ten or twelve years old who had been suddenly sent away from home to provide for himself. They had to find homes, money, churches, and education for their children. They had to learn to be good citizens instead of slaves. I did not wonder that in a few hours the wild joy had ended, and that fear had taken its place. They were finding that freedom was more serious thing than they had expected.

Some of the old slaves were seventy or eighty years old. The best years of their lives had gone. The story of the early Days, p.24 Booker WASHINGTON.
