Hilbert analysis

1) Let(en)n≥1 be an Hilbertian basis in a separable Hilbert spaceH. a) Show that en *0as n→ ∞.

Let(an)n≥1 be a bounded sequence of real numbers. We set

b) Show thatkunk →0.

c) Show that √

n un*0weakly inH.

2) Let H be a real Hilbert space, and K ⊂H be a convex closed cone with vertex 0 (i.e.if x∈ K and λ≥0, thenλx∈K). Show that iff ∈H, then its projectionu=PK(f)is characterized by the properties

– u∈K – (f−u, u) = 0

– for allv∈K,(f−u, v)≤0.

3) Let Ω be an open subset of RN with finite (Lebesgue) measure, and ϕ : Ω → R be a nonnegative measurable function. We define

K=

u∈L2(Ω) ; |u(x)| ≤ϕ(x)for a.e. x∈Ω .

Show that K is a non empty convex and closed subset of L2(Ω). Show that the orthonormal projection PK(u)of any element u∈L2(Ω) is given by

PK(u) =uχ{|u|≤ϕ}+ϕχ{u>ϕ}−ϕχ{u<−ϕ}.

4) Let H be a real Hilbert space, and M be a non zero closed linear subspace of H. Show that for all f ∈H\M, the infimum

µ= inf

u∈M kuk=1

(f, u)

is reached at a unique point. (Hint : consider a minimizing sequence)

5) All functions of this exercise are real valued. Let us consider the equation

( u00(t) =f(t)for allt∈(0,1), u(0) =u(1) = 0.

a) Show that iff ∈ C([0,1]), then the solution of (1) is given by

u(t) = Z 1

0

K(t, s)f(s)ds ∀t∈[0,1],

for some K: [0,1]×[0,1]→Rto be determined.

b) Show that the operatorT :f 7→T f defined by

(T f)(t) = Z 1

0

K(t, s)f(s)ds

is well defined from L2(0,1) toL2(0,1), that it is linear, continuous, symmetric and compact.

c) Compute explicitly the eigenvalues ofT.

d) For alln∈N andt∈[0,1], leten(t) = sin(nπt). Deduce from b) and c) that the family en

kenk :n∈N

is a Hilbertian basis ofL2(0,1).

6) LetX andY be two normed linear spaces. LetK(X, Y)be the space of all compact operators fromX toY.

1. Show thatK(X, Y)is a linear subspace ofL(X, Y).

2. Show that any operator T ∈ L(X, Y)with finite range (i.e.dim(T(X))<∞) is compact.

3. Assume thatY is complete. Show thatK(X, Y)is closed inL(X, Y).

4. Assume that Y is a Hilbert space. Show that any compact operator T ∈ L(X, Y) is the limit of a sequence of operators with finite range.

Hint : We recall that a metric space is compact if and only if it is complete and totally bounded.

7) Hilbert-Schmidt operators.Let(X,M, µ)be a finite measure space, and let(X×X,M⊗M, µ⊗µ) be the product measure space. Consider a Hilbert basis(φn)n≥1 ofL2(X, µ).

a) For every m, n≥1, and every(x, y)∈X ×X, define the function ψmn(x, y) :=φm(x)φn(y). Show that (ψmn)m,n≥1is a Hilbert basis ofL2(X×X, µ⊗µ). (Hint : use Fubini’s Theorem).

b) Let K∈L2(X×X, µ⊗µ), and define the operatorTK:L2(X, µ)→L2(X, µ)by

TKf(x) :=

Z

X

K(x, y)f(y)dµ(y) for allf ∈L2(X, µ).

Show that TK(x) is well defined for a.e. x ∈ X, and that TK is a linear continuous mapping from L2(X, µ)into itself.

c) Show thatTK is compact (Hint : one can show that it is the limit of a sequence of operators with finite range).
