LIPSCHITZ AND QUASICONF'ORMAL TUBULAR

NEIGHBOURHOODS OF SPHERES IN CODIMENSION TWO

DAVID GAULD

In this paper

it

is shown that

if

X is a codimension 2 sphere

in

5",

nl4,

5,6, thet

X

has either a Lipschitz or a quasiconformal tubular neighbourhood

if X

is either locally Lipschitz flat or locally quasiconformally flat.

The notation of this paper is the same as that established in [GV]. In particular C denotes either of the categories LIP or QC. Theorem 3.3 of [GV] tells us that if ,

Xis

a locally C-flat codimension 2 sphere in

5", n14,6,

and if

Xis

homotopically unknotted

in

,S', then (^S',

X)

is C-homeomorphic to

(S',

S'-2).

In

this paper we consider the case where -f, might be knotted, obtaining the fbllowing result.

Theorem l. Let XcS'

be

a

locally C-fiat

TOP

(n-2)-sphere

in 5". If

n14,5 or 6

then there is

a

neighbourhood

N of S"-' in S"

and

a

C-embedding

(If, ,S'-')*(S',

X).

Analogously with Theorem 3.4 of [GV], we have the following result.

Theorem 2.

Let g: ,S'-2*,S"

be a locally C-fiat embedding.

If nl4 or

5

then g extends to a C-embedding of a neighbourhood of S"-z in 5".

Proof of Theorem

l.

Encasing as

in

the proof

of

Theorem3.3

of

[GV], since

n#6+n-2+4

we may assume that only two C-encasings are necessary to exhibit the local C-flatness of X.

Now transfer everything to E'. Using the C-Schoenflies theorem we may extend one of the encasings to a C-homeomorphism of .E'.

If

we replace

X

by its inverse image under this homeomorphism, we see that

it

may be assumed that one of the

two C-encasings is the inclusion. By reflection, we may assume that we have the following situation:

Xn[R-'\3'(a)]:E'-'\8n-21a)

for some

a<1,

and there is

a

C-embedding

h: B"*Ro with h-LX-Bn-z and XaB"chB"-2.

Thus the knotted part of X is trapped inside

8'

where

it

is encased by a single C-encasing.

Assume that the norm on Rn

is l(r,)l:-u* {lx,l}

rather than

the

pythagorean norm so that B" is a cubic ball rather than a round ball, thus allowing PL methods.

Choose

a:

(V,8tr-2)*(R-r,

X),

a topological embedding where V is a neigh- bourhood of .fl'-z in

ft'.

The existence of s follows from the topological local flatness

of

X:

by [KS2], Xadmits a normal disc bundle in

E'since nl4;

as noted in [K], doi:10.5186/aasfm.1980.0506

(2)

176 Dnvr» Gauro

the 2-disc bundles are classified by

H'(X;

Z) which, when

nl4,

is the trivial group.

Thus Xhas a trivial normal disc bundle in E'thereby providing us with the embedding a. Since aV is a neighbourhood of

R-'-21.8'-':Xn[['\B'],

we may assume that

R1tr'cafz

so, using the relative TOP-Schoenflies theorem, [B] and [GV], we may extend

al['1,4'1a; for

some

b((a,l) to a

homeomorphism

fr of R' so

that

Bfu-z:fi"-2.

Choose

r=0

sufficiently small

so that B"-2X82(r)cB-tV

and

aBlB'-zY.B2(r)lchB". Let y:qBlSn-27fr2(r).

Then the embedding

7

satisfles

the following properties:

imycB"ahB";

y is the identity on a neighbourhood of S,-BXB2(r); y[,8,-rX0]

:

XoB,.

Suppose we can construct a C-embedding

which is the identity

ä[B''-'X0].Let

ä

:

fin-z

xB'(r

*

Bn

on a neighbourhood

of

Sn-'XB'(r12) and satisfies

XaB"c

,^r

- tR'\B'l

u IB' -', x B, (, l2)1,

and extend ä over N by the identity. Then N is a neighbourhood of

['-2

in

['

and

ä is a C-embedding. Moreover

U;'-z-1['-\B'-'z]uä[B"-zx}1:y.

Thus, apart from the change of scenery from

S'

to R-', ä is the required C-embedding. Thus it is sufficient to construct the C-embedding ä as above.

Consider the TOP handle y: this is PL straight on åB'-2X B2(r):,S'-BXB2(r), being the inclusion there. Since

n*4 or

5, either

n=3 or n-2*3

and n>5.

Using [M] in the former case and [KSr] in the latter case, we may straighten y. More precisely, there is an isotopy

yr Bo-z:1B'(r)tB'(0=l=1) with

yo:y, yrlBo-zX B'z(rlz) PL and

?t:I

of, a neighbourhood of

lS'

-' x

Br(r)l u lB'-2 X

(B'(r)\B'(0)]

for some t

- r.

Let

I : (R'-'\h-L

y lBt -2 XOl) u å-1y,

[B'-'

X0].

It is claimed that

Iis

a locally C-flat TOP (n-2)-sphere in

fr'

with

[1f

homotopy

equivalent

to

,S1.

(i) Iis

a TOP (n -2)-sphere: this follows from the fact that y[E'-'zXO] is homeo- morphic

to yr[B'-2X0]

by a homeomorphism which is the identity on the bound-

ary. Note that yr[,8'-2x0]nX\.8':0, since

),r[.8'-2X0]cyrlB"-2xBz7r17:

t lB" - 2 y 3z 7r)l c Bo, so

points

of h-LyrlB"-'X0l

this follows from the fact

that

7-trr1B"-zXB2(rl2) is

a

C-embedding; at the remaining points

of

Y,

vizå-1[S'-3x0], it

follows from

(3)

Lipschitz and quasiconformal tubular neighbourhoods of spheres in codimension

two

177

the fact that y and ?, are the inclusion on a neighbourhood

of S'-3X82(r),

so that in a neighbourhood og 4-r1S'-3X01,

y

is still

['-2.

throwing R''-2 onto

I,

so Y is even topologically unknotted..

Now apply Theorem 3.3 of [GV] to (R',

I).

Since

nl4

or 6, there is a C-homeo-

morphism

f, (R",8'-';*1n', f;.

Moreover, because

of

the way the C-homeo- morphism was constructed in [GV], we may assume

that/is

the identity on a neigh- bourhood

of *z-z\å-1?[Bn-zX0].

Let

ö:hf -rh-tylBo-zxBr(rl2).

We checkthe

required properties of ä.

(a)

äisaC-embedding:

y rfB" - 2 X 82 (r I 2)l

c

y rlB" - 2 X Bz (r )l

:

y lB' - 2 X 82 (r )1

c

h Bn,

so

h-tyrlB"-'*32(rl2)

is a C-embedding as, therefore, is

f-r7-rrrlB"-2XAzg121

Making

r

smaller

if

necessary, we can be sure that

f -' h-' y r[8" - 2 X 82 (r I 2)]

c

8", so that ä is a well-defined C-embedding.

(b)

ä is the identity on a neighbourhood

of S'-3X82(rl2):

this follows from the facts that y, is the inclusion on such a set

and/is

the identity on a neighbourhood of

['-'1å-'r1,8'-2X0]

hence on a neighbourhood of

,, -1 y [S" - B X B'z (r I 2))

:

h -t ], [S' -B X n' (r 1211 provided

r

is small enough.

(c) XnB'cä[8,-2y0]: in

fact,

f -rh-L yr[B'-2 X0]

:

h-r yfB"-z XOl,

so ä[B'-2X0]: ][B'-'X0): XaB".

This completes the construction of ä and hence completes the proof of Theo- rem

I. u

Proof of Theorem 2. The proof

of

Theorem

2 is

much the same as that of Theorem

I

but one uses instead (C,g)-encasing and [GV, Theorem3.4] neither of which requires the restriction
