Question: The arrival of e-cigarettes on the market has resulted in some contro- versy as to their use. Should they be seen solely as a means for helping addicts to stop smoking or should they be regarded as an acceptable replacement for traditio- nal cigarettes? Discuss the relative merits of both views. Use specific reasons and examples to develop your essay.
Debate over e-cigarettes is raging worldwide, and on many fronts including their regulation, medical use and effects on young people.
On the one hand, the arrival on the market of an inexpensive device which reduces the harmful effects of traditional cigarettes must be applauded. Many heavy smo- kers wish to quit the habit but use of a nicotine patch is not always sufficient as it does not take into account the social and behavioral aspects associated with the act of smoking.
On the other hand, however, the ease of access to these currently lightly or unre- gulated addictive products can only encourage young people to take up a bad habit and, what is more, gives the allusion to existing smokers that the devices are themselves without harm.
A solution which takes into account both these aspects needs to be found. First and foremost, it is important to establish if there are other dangers associated with the e-cigarette. Furthermore, regulation is needed so that e-cigarettes must not be allowed to encourage young people to take up the habit of smoking in any form.
Finally, a smoker should be encouraged to move to the e-cigarette to reduce the harmful effects s/he is currently exposed to.
