SUBJECT: References on Combined Heat and Moisture

Movement in Materials

A growing awareness of the importance of combined heat and moisture movement in materials has led to an interest in the

literature on this topic. Pertinent papers are being found in

many languages and in the Scientific journals of many fields of

study. Although this literature search is by no means complete,

and additional references of importance are still being found, it is considered desirable to issue a tentative list at this time.

The National Research Council through its Division of Building Research has close links with building research in many

countries. Dr. P. Becher of the Statens Byggeforsknings Institu ,

20 Borgergade, Kobenhavn K, Denm (Danish National Institute

of Building Research) has given the benefit of his knowledge and

experience in this field. The work of Prof. A. Watzinger of

orway, Prof. Hjalmar Granholm, Nils Holmquist, C.R. Johansson of Sweden, Dr. J.8. Cmmnerer of Germany, Dr. Friedrich Bruckmayer

of ustria, and H.B. Jespersen of Denmark, is considered to be of

special intere at. E. van Gunst and D. van Zuilen of The Netherlands

in their paper in English to the BUilding Researoh Congress, 1951, present a review of the subject and refer particularly to the work

of Cammerer. A paper, also in English, by Carl Munters, appears

to be based largely on European work and makes references to the work of Johansson, Cammerer and others.

Several of the Swedish papers have already been translated. There is much German work which appears to be of importance and

which must be assessed. The translation of large numbers of papers

presents a formidable task.

The following references include papers by soil scientists.

Progress is being made in the study of the influence of temperature

on soil moisture movements, despite the fact that soil is a more complex material than many of the common building materials.
