Feeder Links to the Trans-African Highway Five Year Work Programme

1. The Trans-African Highway project which connects Mombasa (Kenya) with

Lagos (Nigeria) through Uganda, Zaire, Central African Republic and Cameroon is also of interest to the following 11 countries which would be linked to the Highway by feeder roads: Burundi, Chad, Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, Malawi,.^Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, and Zambia,

2. The current status of the feeder roads, which is shown country by country in Annex I, may be summarized as follows:

(a) of the total length of 14 O"1 km, about 9 229 km {6G&) are of all-

weather standard and these are composed of:

(i) 4 534 km bitumen surfaced roads;

(ii) 4 695 km all—weather but not bitumen surfaced roads; and

(b) the remaining 4 842 km (34$) consist of partially improved and unimproved

earth roads, tracks and tr"ails.

3« The proposed Five Ysar Work Programme, given in Annex I, is based on information available at the secretariat with tregard to the present condition of the feeder roads.
