SUMMARY
UTILIZATION OF HIGH-MOISTURE MAIZE SILAGES FOR FATTENING PIGS The utilization of
high-moisture silages
was examined in two trials carried out underpractical
conditions.
According
to a feed restriction schedule( 2 . 4
feedunits/day/pig
of6 5 kg
liveweight),
the animals received a diet in which maize
represented
72 per cent of thedry
matter.In the first
trial,
thepigs
were fedhigh-moisture
maizesilages
as well as asupplement
ofprotein high enough
toprovide
a crudeprotein
level of either 13 per cent or IS per cent(adjusted
to 86 per cent
dry matter)
of the diet. Thegrowth
and carcassperformances
were identical.In the second
trial,
no difference was noticed between the results obtained withpigs receiving dry
maize( 14 - 1 6
per centmoisture)
and those fedhigh-moisture
maizesilage ( 35 - 4 o
per centmoisture).

il s’est fortement échauffé. Un troisième a été séché en deux passages à8 0° C, séparés

FEEDING VALUE OF MAIZE
SUBJECTED
TO DIFFERENT DRYINGAND STORAGE TREATMENTS Trial 1
A
sample
of maize wassubjected
to hot airdrying (8 0° C) immediately
afterharvesting,
amethod which is
generally
used in France. Anothersample
waskept,
beforedrying (8 0 °C),
for7
days
in apoorly
ventilatedbin, resulting
inspontaneous heating
of the maize. The thirdsample
was dried twice at
8 0 °C,
the two treatmentsbeing separated by
30days (moisture :
22 p.100 )
under sufficient ventilation. The three maize
samples
came from the same field.Each
sample
was divided into twoportions
with either 14or 18 p. Too moisture.The six
( 3
X2 ) samples
of maize were offered to8 4 Large
Whitepigs ( 42
castratedmales,
42females)
fedindividually
between 32 and 103kg
liveweight
and semi ad libitum till the animals had reached adaily
intake of 2.1kg (maize :
72 p.100 ).
The treatments did not affect the carcasses.
Poorly
ventilated maize gave lowerperformance
than the control maize
(growth :
- 5 p. 100 ; feed conversion ratio : + 6 p.Too). High
moisturestorage
had no effect either on controlmaize,
or on maize dried twice. The best results were ob- tained with the latter.Trial 2
Six other maize
samples
wereinvestigated
under the same conditions ofhousing
andfeeding
and with the same animals. As in the case of trial I,
only growth performances
were affected.4
