Ships and Structures in Ice Database and Web Page: A Summary Report 1.0 INTRODUCTION
The world, science, and engineering are all slowly leaning more and more towards technology and the Internet every day. As technology advances our knowledge and use of technology has to advance with it to be able to do things in the most efficient way possible. By keeping ourselves on track with the advances in technology and the Internet we can be assured to get work done faster and easier.
The purpose of the ships and structures in ice database and web page is to allow for greater accessibility to the work being done here at IOT. Everyone at IOT has access to the Internet at his or her computer just as similar facilities and
researchers around the world. By having IOT’s ships and structures in ice
database accessible through the Internet, people can access the information in a more efficient, less time-consuming manner. It also makes it much easier for the staff at IOT to find a conference report, journal, or article online than to having to physically look for it.
This web page offers a variety of features. It allows you to search the database using keywords, titles, authors, date of publication, and source. It has many references to other databases like the one here at IOT, presentations that can be viewed online, as well as documents in Adobe PDF. There is a page dedicated to ice model basins, which contains a list and description of different ice model basins worldwide. The web page also contains a large photo archive with countless images of IOT’s facilities, sea trials, ships, and much more.
By making this web page the ships and structures database here at IOT is linked with the databases of all the other similar databases out there. This will allow people to see the success of IOT and the effort and pride they put into their work.
2
2.0 DATABASE DEVELOPMENT
The ships and structures in ice database was a pre-existing database that had to be updated and organized. First it consisted of three author columns, a title, source, year of publication, reference type, scale, mod_str, full_str, CAT number, and OEIC number columns. There were also unnecessary columns that did not contain any information, giving a total of fifteen columns.
To organize and condense this database to make it easier to search, the three author columns were combined into one with a dollar sign separating each
author. The three columns that did not contain any information were collapsed so there would be no holes in the database. Then there was a column added for the CISTI number. These numbers were found individually by searching IOT’s online catalogue using authors, keywords and source to find the number. The final eleven columns make up the searchable database.
Three more databases have been compiled as well. A search was done on the cold regions web page where references were collected. References were gathered for a “ship* & ice*” search, a “cone* & ice*” search and an “ice* & conical*” search. The references from these searches were saved individually in full and brief format. Delimiters were added in place of missing fields to the full versions and saved again for the conversion to excel format.
It is necessary to convert the database into excel format to prepare them to be able to be imported into InMagic DBTextworks. This will eventually allow the database to be assessable on the Internet. So far the import of InMagic DBTextworks has only been completed for the first database. There is still formatting to be done in the other three databases before they can be imported to DBTextworks.
There are no working databases on the web page as of now due to the fact that the web page was made during the summer and people were then taking
holidays. The databases have to be approved by certain people to be able to be accessible on the web page.
3.0 GRAPHICS
All graphics used in this web page were made using the software Gimp 2. A colour scheme of light blue and navy blue were chosen for the top navigation and the side navigation. The National Research Council of Canada Common Look and Feel Web Style Guide was used to make sure the font and format of the web page were up to standards. Also. the National Research Council Canada logo is displayed at the top of each page, the NRC logo is located at the bottom left hand side of every page, and there are links to Canada’s site and NRC’s site in the top toolbar.
Figure 1: National Research Council Canada logo
Figure 2: NRC logo
The enter page to the web site is one picture with two buttons underneath it to select either English or French. The main image has “Ships and Structures in Ice” and “Les bateaux et Structures dans la Glace” displayed on it, as well as three circular pictures. These three pictures represent the work that is done at IOT with ships and structures in ice. The first picture is of a model boat attached to the carriage in the ice tank being pulled through the ice. The second is of the confederation bridge with ice around it. The last one is of three men doing work in the ice tank moving some pieces of ice.
4
The top toolbar on the web page is coloured black and blue with a blue tinted curved image underneath it with a blue line underneath that. The blue image beneath the tool bar is an image of the confederation bridge with ice around it. The image was made blue to match the colour scheme of the tool bar.
Figure 4: Top toolbar image
There is an image located at the top left hand side of every page just under both “Ships and Structures in Ice” in the English pages or “Les Bateaux et Structures dans la Glace” on the French pages. This image was chosen to represent the ships and structures in ice web page and the research done at IOT. It is an image of the carriage in the ice tank over a new sheet of ice with the words “Institute for Ocean Technology” displayed on the carriage.
4.0 WEB PAGE DEVELOPMENT
The development of this web page has been done in both English and French using HTML and CSS; there is a French version of every page. It consists of links to other ice tanks around the world, links to other databases, contact information, links to NRC and Canada’s web page, as well as photos and power point
presentations. This section will contain a description of what each main page contains and how it can be useful.
4.1 Home
The home page is a brief description of IOT and what it does with ships and structures in ice. It explains what IOT has to offer and a little bit about the
searchable database and the purpose that the web site serves. The home page contains a tool bar at the top of the page with the choices “Home”, “Database”, “Site Map”, “Resources”, “Help”, “Search”, “NRC Site”, “Canada Site”, and “Français” on it. Every page after the home page contains this top tool bar to allow for easy changing of pages.
4.2 Sitemap
The site map contains links to numerous different pages on the web site. It has a link to the home page, the search, and help page. The search page allows the user to search the database and the help page can guide in a search. The help page gives tips on what words to search for and how to find what is being looked for. It also has two references to which e-mails can be sent for further help or information. This page can also access the resources page. The resources page is another page like the site map that contains links to other pages in the site. It also links the user to the contact page where one can make comments or suggestions.
4.3 Resources
The resources page is a page similar to the site map page as it has links to other pages in the web site. There are a variety of pages located in the resources page. There is a link to bibliographies and databases. This link takes you to a page that has a list of different databases around the world with brief descriptions
6
converted to flash so they do not have to be viewed using power point and they do not take long to load. There are also a number of Adobe PDF’s there as well to read. There is a news page that has a link to IOT’s news. There is also a photos link. This link displays a large list of photos put into different categories. There are photos of the ice tank basin, fixed structures, ships and floating structures, the tow tank basin, the ocean engineering basin fixed structures, EER, and life crafts. There are also pictures of the cavitation tunnel, design and fabrication equipment and models, electronics, sea and ice sea trials, yachts, aquaculture, AUV and sub, EER and life crafts, the IOT building, the history, open house, and diagrams.
4.4 Database
All of the pages found on the web site that contain any information about the database do not work. These pages are “Search the Database”, “Access by Subject”, “Recent Additions”, and “About the Database”. These pages are not yet working because they have to be sent to Ottawa and be placed on the interface there for them to be searchable on the Internet. This decision will be made at a later date, after the author has left. For now, as a reference, these pages should look similar to the database pages found on the EER database web site. To view this site one can go to http://iot-ito.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/eer/home_e.html.
4.5 Incomplete Pages
Throughout the web page there are some pages that are not yet working due to the fact that there was not enough time for information to be received and placed on the web page. Pages that have not had anything done with them are
“Education and Research”, “Events”, and “Conferences and Standards”. The comments on the web page and the suggestions for the database pages are working except they do not send. This is because the web page is not yet on the Internet; it is only on the IOT intranet. It has to have a certain based server for the e-mails to send. These comments and suggestions should send once the web page is completed and placed on the Internet. As well, some pages under photos are incomplete, which include software support, bergy bit impact, podded propulsor in ice, conical structures in ice, remote direction of rim ice, ship
manoeuvring in ice, and numerical modelling and simulation technology; all of these pages show “Under Construction”. Finally, the word wheel under “Search Help” is non-functional because it is a function of the database. In order for the word wheel to work the web site has to have a fully functional database. Once the database is up and running the word wheel should work too.
5.0 CONCLUSION
This web page has been completed to the best of the author’s abilities in both English and French. Hopefully this web page will allow people to access the ships and structures in ice database and any other information they may need about ships and structures in ice through this web site. It contains a lot of useful information and can be used very easily. The web site is designed to make navigation easy and the information provided is easily understood.

Basic Steps
Follow these basic steps to search the Escape, Evacuation and Rescue Database:
Type query criteria. 1.
If a search box includes a Word Wheel button, click it to display a dialog that shows words you can search for. This eliminates trial-and-error searching and makes searching easier. For more information, click the Help button in the Word Wheel dialog. NOTE: The Word
Wheel requires version 3.0 or later of Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. The recommended
browser is Netscape Navigator 4.0. Click here for a complete browser compatibility list.
2.
If you fill in more than one box, results must meet all criteria.
Example: Find documents that contain the term "Offshore safety" AND which were published in "1996".
3.
To clear query criteria, click the Reset button on the search form.
4.
If you are a "member", enter a password before
submitting your search. If you don't have a password, leave the Enter password: box blank - you can still search the database.
5.

Which search box do I use?
The search screen provides you with 6 search boxes. Each search box allows you to search one or more specific fields within the database. The following list includes all of the searchable fields within the database and the search box(es) which can be used to search each field.
Search Box Field
Title/Keyword Author, Title, Corporate Body, Publisher, Year of Publication, Series, Conference Title, Conference Name, Conference Location, Conference Date, Journal Title, Unique Number, ISBN, ISSN, Subject, Summary

Form of Entry : Understanding Data Structure
All of the fields are both term and word indexed. This means that you can enter an individual word or a term providing that you have preceded the term with an equal sign (i.e. =Offshore structures). You can search these fields using "keywords" and/or Boolean strategy and/or Word Wheels.
Although all fields are both term and word indexed, certain fields require a strict form of entry which conforms to the "data structure" of the field. For these specific fields, following the prescribed form of entry will render a more efficient search result. Please refer to the following table for details about these

Finding Words and Phrases - Boolean and
Proximity Operators, Word Truncation
Type the word or term that you want to find; to search for a term, precede it with an equal sign: =resistance or
=pack ice.
To find variations of word stems use the truncation feature. Truncate words by typing an asterisk at the end of one or more words: propel* tech*.
Use the symbols & / ! between words or phrases to represent Boolean AND (&), OR (/), NOT (!). Include a space before and after the symbol. See examples below. Use the proximity operators w# (within) and p#
(preceding) to find words near each other. See examples below.
Words joined by & / ! are executed in left-to-right order: red & white / blue finds items that are red and white, or items that are blue. Use parentheses to control the order of execution: red & (white / blue) finds items that are red and white or red and blue.
Ships & Structures in Ice - Search Help file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/BarbourL/Desktop/Ships%20...
Type this… To find…
=drilling platforms a phrase with those words, in that order. Place quotations marks around the words you would like to search as a term. drilling / platforms either word (or both).
drilling & platforms items that contain both words (items that contain just one of the words will be ignored).
=drilling platforms ! safety* drilling platforms but not safety measures or safety procedures.
drilling p5 platform* drilling preceding platform or platforms by 5 words or fewer. You can include an asterisk at the end of either word. Do not string together phrases (mobile w5 offshore drilling)
drilling w5 platforms drilling within 5 words of platforms (before or after). Do not include phrases.

Searching for Year of Publication
A document can be searched by Year of Publication in three different ways :
You can enter a single year : 1996. 1.
You can search for items greater than or less than a certain year. Use the symbols shown below.
2.
You can search for a range of years. A range consists of two values, low and high, separated by a colon. Include spaces around the colon. See examples below.
3.
Symbol Meaning Example
< less than (before)
< 1998 finds documents published before 1998
<= less than or equal to
<= 1998 finds documents published before or in 1998
> greater than (after)
> 1998 finds documents published after 1997
Ships & Structures in Ice - Search Help file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/BarbourL/Desktop/Ships%20...
5 of 8 15/08/2006 11:17 AM
Case in query criteria is usually ignored (a search for joe smith finds Joe Smith). Punctuation is also ignored, except for the and-or-not symbols (& / !) and the colon for range searches ( : ). If you want these characters to be interpreted literally, use quotation marks ("Smith & Wesson") or replace the
punctuation with a space (Smith Wesson).
[Top of Page]
Using a Droplist
If a search form includes a droplist next to a box, you can open the list and select one item for which to search. Or, you can simply choose to search ALL items.
[Top of Page]

Troubleshooting
Having trouble with a search? Some of the most common problems are listed below :
I got the message "No query criteria specified."
You pressed the Submit Query button without specifying any query criteria, either by:- typing words and/or phrases in the search boxes - selecting choices from droplists
Solution: Specify what you want to search for before pressing
the Submit Query button.
I got the message "Unable to recognize as a correctly
formed query."
Ships & Structures in Ice - Search Help file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/BarbourL/Desktop/Ships%20...
7 of 8 15/08/2006 11:17 AM
If you cannot determine what caused the error, try a simpler search (e.g., just a word in a box) to see if it works. If the search form includes Word Wheel buttons, use them to construct the query, instead of typing criteria. If even simple searches don't work, contact the webmaster for the site.
I found too many records.
If you used an asterisk, omit it and try an exact search instead (search for computer modeling instead of comp*).
I didn't find any records.
Examine the contents of the search form (especially if it is longer than the screen) to verify that you don't have query criteria left over from a previous search.
If you are not sure of the spelling, use an asterisk after the first few characters (behav*) or separate several possible spellings with a forward slash (search for behaviour / behavior).
If you did a complex search, try simplifying it to eliminate confusion. If the search form has Word Wheel buttons, use them to view and paste items to search for. This eliminates guess-work.
If your search includes Boolean symbols (/ & !) or range searches (:), put spaces around the symbols.
Do not use words AND, OR, NOT for Boolean operators. You must use symbols (& / !).
Try using / instead of & between words. Using / means either word can be present (liferafts / lifeboats finds liferafts or lifeboats. Using & means both words must be present liferafts
& lifeboats will not find just liferafts or just lifeboats).
I got the message "Incorrect password entered.
Unable to access the textbase".
The search screen contains an "Enter password:" box. You typed a password which is not in use for this database. Return to the search screen and type a valid password. Remember, the database has a "Silent" password. If you don't know a password, leave the "Enter password:" box blank.
Ships & Structures in Ice - Search Help file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/BarbourL/Desktop/Ships%20...
When I try to display records or change forms, I get
the message, "Your current query has expired.
Perform the search again."
The query set file that stored your search results has expired, so you'll have to do your search again. If this message occurs frequently, contact the webmaster for the site.

The Ships and Structures in Ice Database &
Web Site
The recent growth in the offshore oil and gas industry has made a great increase in transportation through arctic regions, which has led to more emphasis on the importance of
icebreakers and structures that can withstand the force of arctic ice. The Institute for Ocean Technology, National Research Council of Canada has performed numerous physical model tests on these ships and structures as well as mathematical modeling to develop reliable modeling
techniques to aide in the design of these essential ships. IOT’s simulator related modeling projects are modeling and simulation in harsh environments, which is a manoeuvring in ice simulation, DECICE upgrade, podded propulsion in ice and Mackinaw sea trial. IOT has already preformed numerous simulations with the Terry Fox model to develop some
answers. IOT’s goal is to develop a mathematical model that can be used in simulator applications for ships manoeuvring in ice.
The database and web site are currently under development by NRC information center in St.John’s. Which is one of 10
regional information centres maintained by the Canada
Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (CISTI) and is recognized for exceptional scientists and innovators.
