EXTENSIONS OF FUNCTORS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS

CAHIERS DE TOPOLOGIE ET GEOMETRIE DIFFERENTIELLE
Vol. XIX - 2 ( 1978 )
This paper
is,
infact,
devoted to the search of functors Fmaking
the
following diagram
commuteThis
problem
wasinvestigated by
M. Husek(see [11])
who introduced aconstruction
producing
a solution F which is the greatest one. His cons-truction works for functors V of the
topological
type( in
this case the pro- blem( 1 )
was dealt with in[1]
and[2] , too ).
Ingeneral
this constructiongives only
a functorL :
A --3 B and a natural transformation X : U 4 V L . We propose another construction which tests thesolvability
of( 1 )
in thefollowing
sense: whenever a solution Fexists,
then our constructionyields
a solution(which
is the smallestone ).
This construction consists in a transfinite modification of the functorL :
A--+ B( for algebraic
V onestep
suffices)
and it was introduced in[15]
in aspecial
case.The search for a
functor F
is the samething
as thestudy
of exten-sions in the
2-category EX consisting
ofcategories over X .
It is advanta-geous to work in a more
general 2-category DX . Then, roughly speaking,
the
Husek’s
constructioncorresponds
to the situation that a left extension of Talong
K inDX
sits inEX,
while our construction computes a left extension of Talong
K inDX
and modifies it intoEX .
Left extensions in
DX
wereinvestigated by
R. Guitart[5],
whereit was
given
one sufficient condition for their existence. This condition wasgeneralized
in[22] (see
also[6] ).
We present another sufficient condition which describes« pointwise»
left extensions inDX .
These extensions are notpointwise
in the sense of Street[ 20]
butthey
seem to be theright
ones.For
instance, they
induce agood
notion ofdensity.
As in any2-category
left extensions in
D X
lead to the concept of adensity
comonad. In addi-tion,
inDX
the construction of adensity
comonad can beparametrized by
comonads
in X . Many
of these results will be stated in their dual version. If we put in
(1 ) A = B and
U = PV ,
whereP : X --+
X is agiven functor,
then functors F arelifting
of Palong
h and our resultsbring
ageneral point
of view toquestions investigated by
M. Sekanina in[ 18,19 .

toProf. Charles and Andrée Ehresmann for their encouragement and interest in my work.

aconsisting
of an arrowL :

i. e. for anycouple S: A --+ B, (3: T 4 S K,

concerning 2-categories
can be found in[14].
In the
sequel
we will suppose that we have thefollowing
situationin CA T :
1.3. LEMMA. Let
L : A - B
be afunctor and A : U--+ VL,
A : T - L K nat-ural
trans formations
such thatAK . K = VA. r.
Then( L , A ),
X is aleft

of (T,r): (M,W)--+ (B, V) along (K,K): (M, W)-(A, U)
inDX iff, for
everyfunctor
S : A , B andfor

there is a

naturaltrans formation

thatPROOF is evident.
1.4. EXAMPLE. Consider the
following special
case of(2)
Then
(L,X),
X is a left extension of( F , (3) along ( 1 A , a
inD X
iffis a
pullback.
1.5.
DEFINITION( see [9], 26.3 ).
LetV: B --+
be a functor.A morphism f :
x --+ V b is said to beV-generating provided
thatDually,
we define aV-cogenerating morphism.
1.6. REMARK. The characterization 1.3 of left extensions in
DX
is moresimple
when r isV-generating. Namely,
the secondequality
demanded fora is a consequence of the first.
Indeed,
and thus a = a
K. A .
1.7. DEFINITION
(see [22] ).
A functorV:
B --+ X is called aq-functor
ifevery
diagram in X
of the formhas a universal solution. This means that there are
and for every
there is a
unique
t : b--+; 4 b’ such that t . v = v’ andV ( t ) . u
= u’.1.8. DEFINITION
(see [3] ).
Let v : Vb --+ y
be amorphism
in X. A mor-phism
v : b - b in the universal solution of adiagram ( 3 )
in which we putu =
1 V b
is called aV-quasiquotient of
v . We say that V is afunctor
withquasiquotients
if aV -quasiquotient
exists for every v: V b 4 y.1.9. REMARK.
Any q-functor
is a functor withquasiquotients.
If B haspush-
outs, then the converse
implication
holds(see [22] ).
If B haspushouts and V
has a leftadjoint, then V
hasquasiquotients ( see [4] ). If B
has finitelimits,
intersections andcoequalizers and V
preserves finite limits andintersections,
then eachregular epimorphism
has aV-quasiquotient.
In the
sequel
we will need to know howproperties
of aV-quasiquo-
tient of v
depend
onproperties
of v .Clearly
aV-quasiquotient
of anepi- morphism
is anepimorphism.
If X is an(extremally epi-mono )-category
and V
preservesmonomorphisms,
then aV -quasiquotient
of an extremalepi
is
extremally epi. If B
hasand V
preserves kernelpairs,
then aU-quasi- quotient
of aregular epimorphism
is aregular epimorphism.
1.10. THEOREM
(see [3,6,22] ). Let
there existleft Kan
extensionsof
Tand W along K and V
be aq-functor. Then
aleft
extensiono f (T , T ) along (K, K) in Dx
exists.SKETCH OF THE PROOF. Let
be left Kan extensions of T
or W
resp.along K .
We get natural transfor-mations such that
Following [ 22] A V
is aq-functor.
Thus thediagram
has a universal solution
Now, ( L , a ), 8 K - cl
is the desired left extension. The same theorem holds in every
2-category
C with a 2-terminal ob-ject. Now,
we aregoing
to state another condition for the existence of left extensions inDx .
1.11. CONSTRUCTION.
Suppose
that for every a E ll there exist L aE B ,
Aa: Ua --+ VL a
and a natural transformationBa: A(K-, a) --+ B(T-,La)
such
that,
for anyf :
K m 4 a , it holdswith the
following
universal property: for everysuch that u .
U f . Km - Vam ( f). Tm
there is aunique morphism
tL a --+
bsuch that
Clearly L : --+
B is a functor andX : U - V L
a natural transfor- mation.Namely,
L g isdefined,
if g: a -a’ , by
the universal property as :Furthermore,
theequality A =BKmm(1Km)
defines a natural transformationA : T --+ L K .
1.12. THEOREM.
(L,A), A is
aLeft
extensiono f ( T , r ) along (K,K) , in
the
2-category D X .
P ROOF.
(L , ,À),
À is an extension becauseLet
(S, a),
6 be another extension. The universal propertydefining
L aproduces
a natural transformation a : L 4 S as follows :From
1.3
we obtain that(L , A ),
h is the desired left extension.1.13.
DEFINITION. The left extension constructed in 1.11 will be calledpointwise.
1.14. REMARK. If X has
pullbacks,
thenDX
is arepresentable 2-category (in
the senseof [20] ).
It means thatDX
has commaobjects
and2-pull-
backs. A comma
object
for an op-spanin
Dx
is the spantogether
with the 2-cellwhere the span
(Do , F/G, D1 ) together
with the 2-cell h :FDo 4 GDI
is acomma
object
for the op-span(F, C, G)
inCAT
and thefollowing diagram
isa
pullback
inCAT ( F/ G, X) :
Pointwise left extensions in
Dx
in our sense do not agree with thepointwise
left extensions in the sense of[20] ;
the last one are too strong. Our
pointwise
left extensions areprecisely
thosehaving
thepreservation
property
defining pointwise
left extensions in[20]
for arrowssuch
that y
is iso.Hence both concepts agree in the case X = 1 .
1.15. L EMM A. Let T be
pointwise V-generating (it
means that each comp-onent
of
r isV-generating). Then (L , X ),
k is apointwise left
extensiono f ( T , T ) along (K, K )
inDx iff
themorphisms
have
the following universal prop erty : For
anysuch that u . U
f. Km
=V r
rmfor
everyf: K m ,
a, s there is aunique
mor-phism
t : L a 4 b such that V t .Àa
= u .P ROO F. The
assignment am ( f ) = f
defines a natural transformationbecause
rm
isV-generating. Namely,
for every g: m --+ n , it holdsThen the assertion follows from 1.6 and 1.12.
1.16. PROPOSITION. L et r be
pointwise V-generating.
Then eachof the following
two conditions ensures the existenceof
apointwise left
extensiono f ( T , T ) along (K, K)
inDX :
10 B is
complete, well-powered,
has acogenerating
setof objects
andV preserves limits.
20 M is
small,
B and Xhave
sums and V is aq- functor.
P ROOF. It is sufficient to
produce
a universal solution from 1.15.Suppos-
ing 1,
one can show that the category of allpossible
solutions iscomplete,
well-powered
and has acogenerating
set ofobjects.
Thus it has an initialobject
which is the desired universal solution. If M
is small andB, X
havesums, then instead of
searching
a universal solution from1.15,
one cansearch a universal solution of the
diagram
But now the property of
being
aq-functor
makes thejob.
1.17. PROPOSITION. Let K be an
isomorphism, K full
and(L, A), A
apointwise le ft
extensiono f ( T , r) along (K, K )
inDX . Then
eachof
thefollowing
two conditions ensuresthat -k
is anisomorphism :
10 K is
faithful;
20 r is
pointwise V-generating.
P ROOF. Put
BKnm ( f) = T f’
for everyf:Km4Kn
such thatf=Kf’.
Itholds
In the case of
2,
itimplies
thatBKn: A ( K - , Kn) --+ B ( T -, Tn)
is a nat-ural transformation
( compare
with theproof
of1.15). Let K
befaithful
andg : m’ --+
m . ThenSo (3Kn
isagain
a natural transformation. It suffices to show thathave the universal property from 1.11. Let us have
b,
u , a from 1.11. Thenan ( 1 Kn ):
T n --+ b is the desiredmorphism
t .1.18. LEMMA.
Let
r be(pointwise) V-generating and (L, X), k
a(point-
wise) left
extensionof ( T , r ) along (K, K)
inDX .
Then À is(pointwise)
V-generating.
PROOF is evident.
1.19. L EMMA. Let
(L,À), À
be ale ft
extensiono f ( T , r ) along (K, K ),
in
DX .
Then eachof
thefollowing
two conditions ensures that X ispoint-
wise mono :
10 rc and h are
iso,
r ispointwise
mono andis mono
for
every a EA.20
There
is an extension(S, 6),
aof ( T , r ) along (K, K)
inDX
suchthat a is
pointwise
mono.PROOF is evident.
2. EXTENSIONS IN
CX .
Let
Cx
be thesub-2-category
ofDX
which has the sameobjects
as
DX ,
arrows( F,O)
suchthat 0
is anisomorphism
and any 2-cell inDX
between arrows of
Cx belongs
toCX .
We will be interested in left and
right
extensions inCX .
In thisPart we will work in the situation
( 2 )
considered inC x (i.e.
K and r willbe
isomorphisms). Evidently,
if(L , A),
À is a left extension of( T , r) , along ( K , K )
inDx
and X is anisomorphism,
then( L , A ), A,
is a leftextension of
( T , r ) along (K, K )
inCX . Similarly,
one can treatright
extensions.
2.1. PROPOSITION.
1 f (R, p ), p is
aright
extensionof (T, r-1 ) along
(K, k-1 ) in D’y
andp is
anisomorphism,
then(R, p-1 ), P
is aright
ext-ension of ( T , r ) along (K, K ) in CX .
P ROO F follows from the fact that the
assignment
,gives
anisomorphism Cx -4 Cl.
’If the extension from 2.1 is
pointwise,
then we obtain the construc-tion
from [11].
Atypical
situation in whichright
extensions inCX
are des-cribed in 2.1 is
given
in thefollowing
theorem.Firstly
we recall some defi-nitions from
[7].
A source in X is a class of
morphisms I fi :
x -->xi }i E I
in X . It iscalled mono if
X is called
a (E M )-category
if E is a class ofepimorphisms
in X clos-ed under
compositions
withisomorphisms,
M is a class of sources in Xclosed under
compositions
withisomorphisms,
and thefollowing
conditionshold:
( a )
X is( E ,
M)-factorizable,
i. e. for every source{ fi } i E I
in X thereexist e E E and
I gi li
c M such thatfi
=gi. e
for each i El.
( b )
X has the( E , M )-diagonalization
prpoerty, i. e. wheneverf
and eare
morphisms
andI gi 1,
and{ fi } I
are sourcesin X
such thatthen there exists a
morphism g
such thatLet X be an
(E,M)-category. We
say that a functorV:
B --+ X is( E , M )-topological
if for every sources !I fi :
x ,V bi} I E M
there is a sourceI fi :
b -bi II in B
and anisomorphism f :
V b --+ x such thatwith the
following
universal property: For every sourceI gi:
b’ -bi I I
inB and every
morphism
g :Vb’--+ x in X
such thatfi . g = V gi
for eachi E I
there is a
unique morphism k :
b’ --+ b such thatFurther, V
is calledabsolutely topological
if it is( E ,
M)-topological
forany
( E , M )-structure
onX.
2.2. THEOREM. L et V be an
( E ,
M)-topological functor
andThen there exists a
right
extensiono f ( T , r-1 ) along (K, K-1 )
inex.
P ROO F.
Since V
is( E ,
M)-topological
andthe
following diagram
has a un iversal solutionsuch that P a is an
isomorphism.
Since any
( E ,
M)-topological
functor is faithful( see [7] ),
r ispointwise
V-generating
and the assertion follows from the dual of1.15
and from 2.1.2.3. COROLL ARY.
I f
V isabsolntely topological,
then there exists aleft
extension
o f ( T , r ) along ( K , K )
and aright
extensiono f (T, r-1 ) along (K, K-1 )
inCX .
P ROOF follows from 2.2 and froio the fact that any
absolutely topological
functor is
absolutely co-topological 1 (
see[7] ).
In
[2]
it is shown that th Î.s property is characteristic forabsolutely topological
functors.2.4. PROPOSITION. Let any
morphism of
E beextremally epi
and V be( E ,
M)-topological. I f
there exists an extensiono f ( T , r ) along (K, K )
inCX,
then there exists aleft extension,
too.PROOF.
Following
Lemma 6.1 from[7]
there is a left extension(L, ’A),
hof
(T,r) along (K, K)
inDX
such that X ispointwise extremally epi.
Hence the assertion follows from 1.19, 2°.
If V is not
( E ,
M)-topological,
then the Hu0161ek’s construction usual-ly
does notyield
a left extension inCX.
We shall state a moregeneral
cons-truction of left extensions in
CX
which was introduced in aspecial
casein
[15] (compare
with2.13).
2.5. CONSTRUCTION.
Let X

Let

Let g : a’--+ a be a
morphism
in A . ThenSince
Va

andis a monosource,
the (extremally epi-monosource-diagonalization
propertyof X provides a unique morphism g’: xa’--> xa
such thatHence there is a
unique morphism L g:
L a’-L a
such thatThus L:A --+B
is a functor andy
L 4 L a natural transformation. Fur-ther, yL K
is iso becauseis mono.
Namely, 1VLKn belongs
to this source.2.6. LEMMA.
Let X
be an( extremally epi - monosource )-category and V yL
be
pointwis e extremally epi.
ThenI VL
hI b :
a 4K m ,
mE M}
is a mono.source
for
everya E A .
PROOF. Since
( VYLKm . h }h is
mono andVYLa extremally epi,
there is aunique morphism
t : h L a --+ xa
such th atClearly t

Thus{ V L h } h
is mono.2.7. CONSTRUCTION. Let

Then eacho f
thefollowing
conditions en-sures the existence

3° M is
a small and B aco-well-powered category

comparison with 3, B is only extremally co-well-powered,
but inaddition B has and V preserves

In cases 1 and

By 1.9, hyL

exists.
2°
Similarly, L*

1.9 and 2.6.3°
Clearly La

Since B

exists for every a .4°
By

any

Since B isextremally co-well-powered, L*a
exists for every a .
2.9. THEOREM. Let X

that there exists an extension

extensiono f ( T , r ) along ( K , K ) in Cx
PROOF.
Evidently, (L*, VY . A), YOK.A
is an extension of( T , r) along (K, K )
inDX .
Let(S, 6 ), Q
be an extension of( T , r) along (K, K )
in. By 1.3
there is aunique
naturaltransformation 60: L 0 =
L - S suchthat:
Let a be an ordinal number and suppose
that,
for any(3

isolated,
aE A ,
and consider thediagram
where the
triangles
at the bottom express the definition ofLa = ï a.. 1.
SinceI Uhth
is mono and6a iso, {VSh}h
is mono. Thus there is aunique
mor-phism t

unique morohism 8a
such thatSince
Y a’

S is a natural transformation. For alimit,
the existence of

from the construction ofLa

Now, 6a = 6aa
defines a natural transformation6 is a
morphism
of thecorresponding
extensions and theunicity
of 8 foll-ows from 2.1 and from the fact that
y

It remains to prove thatVOY.A

thesupposition
there is an extension(S, 6 ), Q
of( T , r ) along (K, K)

We will show thato,-’ - V8

it is a left inverse. Further it holdsSince
L*a

Since 6,
À andYO K

is iso as well. Hence6-1a . is a right
inverse ofVY0a.Aa.

as in1.19, 1,
one deduces thatV yO . A

It can be shown that

X is a left extension of(T, r) along (K, K )

iffL ,
X is a left Kan extension of Talong K . If K

faithful,
then K and r areisomorphisms
and extensions of( T , T) along (K,K)

functors in the sense of[15]. Now,
the construction 2.7provides just
the functorL*
from[15].
Then Theorem 2.9 is ageneralization
ofProposition

2.10 and 2.12 go out from Theorem 3.5of [16].
3. PARAMETRIZED CODENSITY MONADS.
3.1. DEFINITION. Let
V: A --+ X
be a functor and(P,n,03BC)
a monad in X.If
(S, n, 03BC )
is a monad in A and o’ :V S --+ P V
a natural transformation such thatthen we say that
(S, 6 ) ( more precisely ((S, n , 03BC ), a )) is a lax lifting o f (P, n, 03BC) along
V.Morphisms o f liftings
a :(S, 6 ) --+ ( S ’ , 6 ’ )
are taken asmorphisms
of monads
In this way we get the category
Z (P, h)
of laxliftings
of a monad Palong
the
functor V .
Liftings
of(P , n , 03BC ) along V
are laxliftings (S, a)
such that:6 =
1 p v. Any
laxlifting (S, 6)
determines a functorV: AS 4 X p
betweenKleisli
categories
and a natural transformation 6 :V Gs --+ Gp V
whereare the
underlying
functors.Let us have functors
a natural transformation K: VK --+
W and
a monad(P , n , 03BC )
inX .
Considerthe
following special
case of the dualof ( 2 ) :
3.2. THEOREM.
Let (R,p), p
be aright
extensionof (K, P K . n VK) along ( K , P K )
inD) . Then
there are naturaltrans formations ij, 03BC exhibiting (R, n , 03BC)
as a monad in A such that(Ii, p )
is a laxli fting o f

Vand
p
is an actionof
R on K. Inaddition, for
any monad(S, 17 03BC)
inA ,
any lax
li fting (S, 6) of
Palong V
and anyaction g of
S on K such thatthere exists a
unique morphism of lifting
a :( S , 6 ) --+ (R, p )
suchthat :
cr
= p. a K (i. e. a is
amorphism o f actions, too).
PROOF.
Clearly (1A,nV), 1K
is an extension of(K,PK.n VK) along ( K, P K)
inDI .
Thus there is aunique
naturaltransformation n: 1A --+ R
such that p .
Vfi 71
V andp.n K = 1 K . Further, ( R R ,03BC p. Pp .pR ), p . R p
is such an extension as
well,
because thefollowing diagram
commutes :Thus there is a
unique
natural transformation03BC : R R -
R such thatIf we show that
( R , n , 03BC )
is amonad,
then( R , p )
w ill be a laxlifting
andp
an action. The commutativediagrams
and the
universality
of( R , p ),
pimply
theassociativity
of( R, n , 03BC ) .
Sim-ilarly
the commutativediagrams
complete
theproof
that( R, n, 03BC )
is a monad.Let
(S, ij , ii)
be a monad inA , (S, 6)
be a laxlifting
of Palong V ,
Q be an action of
S on K
and suppose thatThus (S,6),6 is ab extension of (K,Pk.n VK) along (K,Pk), which
provides
aunique
natural transformation a : S --+ R such that cr = p .V a
and6 = p . a K. It remains to show that a is a
morphism
of monads. This follows from the commutativediagrams
3.3. PROPOSITION. Let V:A4X
be a functor, (P, n ,03BC ) a monad in
S: A 4 A a
functor
andn : 1A--+ S, 03BC :
SS --+ Snatural trans formations.
Leta:
V S -7 P V
be aV-cogenerating
naturaltrans formation
such that there aresatis fied
the conditionsfor
a laxlifting from
3.1. Then(S, n, 03BC) is
a monad.P ROOF. The assertion follows from the
diagrams ( 3 ), ( 4 )
and( 5 )
from theproof
of 3.2( considered
for( S , n, 03BC )
instead of( R , n , 03BC ) ).
Here the univ.ersality
of p , p isreplaced by
the fact that a ish-cogenerating.
If
( P , n, 03BC )
is theidentity
monad inX ,
then the monad(R , n , 03BC )
from 3.2 is the
codensity
monad inducedby (K, K)
inDX .
So Theorem 3.2 tells us that the construction of acodensity
monad inÐ1
admits a para-m etrization
by
monadsin X .
In thecase X
= 1 there ispossible only
theparametrization by
theidentity
monad and we get the usualcodensity
monadin CA T .
3.4. DEFINITION. We say that an arrow
(K,K):(M, W)--+(A, V) is
co-dense
inÐX
if( 1 A , 1 V ), 1 K
is apointwise right
extension of( K, K )
al-ong
( K, K)
inÐ1 .
3.5. PROPOSITION.
Let
Vbe faith ful. Then
an arrowi s
cadense in D*X i f f for a morphism f : Va --+ Va’, f = V f’ holds for a mor- phism f ’: a 4 a’ whenever for
any z6 A
and anymorphism h : a ’ --+ z there
exis ts amorphism h’:
a --+ z such that Vh
= Vh . f .
PROOF follows from
1.15.
The condition from the last
proposition
was often considerated in thelitterature ( e. ,g. [ll,8
or16] )
and it means that thecodensity
in oursense is a
right
one(at
least for the fullsubcategory
ofDt consistingof
faithful
functors F: A --> X ). Results 1.5
and 1.8 from[16]
can begeneraliz-
ed to the
following
statementsconcerning
«the reflection of acodensity
al-ong a
change
of base ».3.6.
LEMMA.Let G: X -->

Dy. Then, each of the
twofollowing conditions
ensuresthat
(K, K)
is codense inD*X:
1°
G

20 K

A commaobject

in the sense of[20] ;
the last ones areagain

Let us have functors U : A 4 X

the category of arrows

the defini-tion
E (U, V)

Recall that this category has as
morphisms
