The
feeding
value of threecarbohydrate
sourcesincorporated
into adry pelleted
milkreplacer
for
piglets
weaned at 10days
was studied in a trialcomprising
120animals from 20litters. The animals were distributed into groupsaccording
to a balancedincomplete
blocksdesign
of thetype
I( I experimental
unit = 2piglets ;
I block = three littermatepairs ;
ireplication -
2 con-temporary litters) allowing comparison
of 6 treatments.Group
I(control)
received a« rst age
control feed >1 ba,se3 on skimmilk. The2/3
of the latterwere
replaced by
an association of soluble fishprotein
concentrate(SFPC 8 0 )
and thecarbohydrate
sources studied in the
experimental
diets : maltodextrine(group 2 ) ;
maltodextrine( 50
p.100 )
+ driedwhey
ultrafiltrate( 50
p.ioo) (group 3 ) ;
ultra filtrate(group 4 ) ;
ultrafiltrate( 50
p.100 )
-r pure lactose( 50
p.ioo) (group 5 )
and pure lactose(group 6).
The « 2nd age feeda (barley, soyabean oil-meal, herring meal)
was offered from the age of 28days
andtotally replaced
the a Ist age feed <>two weeks later.
The corrected
growth performances
showed that the « maltodextrine diet >1(6 7 g/day)
wasslightly
inferior to the control diet( 77 g/day) during
thepostweaning period ( 10 - 2 8 days).
Thiseffect became less marked
during
thefollowing period
and theanalysis
of results obtained at the age of 42days
did not reveal anysignificant
difference to beimputed
to thecarbohydrates
studied. However,
analysis
of the final results recorded at the age of6 3 days
showed asignificant delay
in thegrowth
of group 6(pure lactose)
which may beimputed
to apooreradaptation
ofthe animals to the « 2nd age feed o.
During
theperiod
between 14-21days
of age, theapparent digestibility
of the diet waslower in the
experimental
groups than in the control group(ADC
of thedry
matter == 80.2 and8
3 . 4
, nitrogen =
73.7 and8 0 .8).
These difference;disappeared during
thefollowing periods ( 21 - 42 days)
asregards
theapparent digestibility
coefficient(ADC)
of thedry
matter andorganic
matter.On the other
hand,
the ADC ofnitrogen
in the control group(88. 2 )
remainedhigher
than that of the maltodextrine diet(8 4 .8) :
theexperimental
diets based on lactose gave intermediate values(8 5 . 9
). However,
thegreat variability
of theseresults, especially during
the initialperiod,
doesnot
permit
to ensurestatistically
these results at the level P < 0.05.On the other hand, all the results show that a
high
level of driedwhey
ultrafiltrate( 34
p.100 )
is wellaccepted by
thepiglets
and that the utilization of maltodextrine is as favourable as that of lactose in the « ist age feed ».Furthermore,
at the age of oweeks, comparison
between theperfor-
mances of groups 2 and 4
