Experts to deliberate on efficient use of renewable energy to promote development in West Africa

ECA Press Release No. 78/2012

Niamey, 28 May 2012 (ECA) – The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Sub-Regional Office for West Africa (ECA SRO-WA) is organizing on 7 and 8 June, 2012, in Lomé, Togo, an ad hoc expert group meeting to discuss ways to strengthen the West African States’ capacity to harness renewable energy for electricity supply, poverty reduction, and climate change mitigation.

The objective of the meeting is to review and share experiences and knowledge in the promotion of renewable energy in West Africa, in order to ascertain and promote the best practices in accessing and utilizing renewable energy sources and services.

The meeting will also assess progress made by member States in overcoming barriers to the exploitation of renewable energy, in line with the Convention for the energy sector signed in 2005 by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA).

At its conclusion, the meeting is expected to provide national and subregional recommendations on how to strengthen the use of renewable energy using West Africa’s vast untapped sources such as hydropower, geothermal energy, solar and wind power, and biomass energy.

The participants at the meeting are representatives of the Ministries of Energy from ECOWAS member States, ECOWAS and UEMOA Commissions, energy sector organizations, and other relevant non-governmental organizations and development partners.

The meeting is part of ECA’s programme for capacity building and support to developmental efforts in Africa.
