ECA and Google Inc. to organize a Train-the-Trainer workshop on innovative tools for statistical data management

Addis Ababa, 28 May 2010 (ECA) - The African Centre for Statistics and the Sub-regional Office for North Africa of the Economic Commission for Africa, in collaboration with Google Inc. and the High Commission for Planning of Morocco are organizing a Train-the-Trainers workshop on Innovative Tools and Techniques for Statistical Data Management and Dissemination. The workshop, which is for selected Francophone countries and Regional Economic Communities (RECs), will take placein Rabat, Morocco from 1 to 4 June 2010.

The participants for this Francophone session are Morocco, Senegal, Cameroon, Burundi and Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as officers from the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) and ECA’s Sub-regional office in North Africa (SRO-NA).

The main objective of the workshop is to train nominated staff of selected member States and RECs on the recent and innovative techniques and tools for statistical data management. The workshop will mainly cover the following topics:

The ECA Statistical Data Management and Dissemination Platforms;

New ideas in statistical data management such as statistical data discovery, special and temporal time-series, community mapping and mobile platforms; and

Google technologies for statistical data management such as Google Map Maker; Google Maps; Google Earth; Fusion Tables; and Public Data Explorer.

The trainees will be expected to adopt the tools and concepts in their work, disseminate lessons they have learnt to their colleagues in their offices and to develop a critical mass of expertise to implement the new methods undertake pilot implementations of the techniques and train other staff in their respective offices. Thereafter, they will further be expected to work with ECA and Google Inc to disseminate the new techniques to other countries and organizations in Africa.

The first workshop was organized from 23-26 March 2010 in Abuja, Nigeria for Anglophone selected countries. The participants for the Anglophone session were officers from National Statistical Offices of Nigeria, Uganda, and Lesotho; as well as a representative from the African Union Commission; Swaziland was represented by an officer from the Department of the Surveyor General. Further delegates from Nigeria came from the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation, the National Space Research and Development Agency, The Nigerian Statistical Association and the Regional Centre for Training in Aerospace Surveys and the University of Lagos.
