Consecration to St. Joseph

Starting on March 30th and ending on the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker, May 1st, we will be using the book Consecration to Saint Joseph by Fr. Don Calloway.

It’s a 33 day preparation book with many reflections on St. Joseph. It concludes with a consecration prayer, which will be said after the morning mass of May 1st and after the 5pm mass that evening. In this Year of St. Joseph, our Saint Joseph parish is looking for as many parishioners and families as possible to consecration ourselves to St. Joseph

If you are interested in reserving a book, attending a small group, or have any questions, please email dwesthoff@stjoecot.org.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PASTOR

By now, many of you have probably heard of the Equality Act that is currently working its way

through the U.S. Congress. On the surface, this sounds like a type of legislation we would all support.

Unfortunately, it is a very seriously flawed piece of legislation and could have a very negative impact on people of faith.

The Equality Act is a bill in the United States Congress, that, if passed, would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, public accommodations, education, federally funded programs, credit, and jury service.

On March 20, 2019, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops sent a letter addressed to the United States Senate that opposed the Equality Act on the grounds of freedom of expression and free- dom of religion, among other concerns. Four committee chairs of the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bish- ops also sent a letter to the House of Representatives to state their opposition to the Equality Act, which they said, ”undermines religious freedom and threatens charitable nonprofits and the people they serve, regulates free speech, hinders quality health care, and endangers the privacy and safety of women and girls.”

Sister Carol Keehan, president of the Catholic Health Association sent a letter to lawmakers in the House expressing concern that the Equality Act, as written, would roll back religious liberty protec- tions. “Federal law has long recognized that certain services can present conflict for some faith-based health care providers with religious or moral objections to providing those services, and protected them from having to do so. We are concerned that the Equality Act omits and could erode or reduce those protections.” This legislation, she said, “lacks conscience protection language and precludes ap- plication of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA).”

A large portion of this bill falls under the category of “gender identity” as opposed to biological identity. Some men and women including children feel that they need to change their gender. These individuals want to be treated equally with those individuals who adhered to their biological identity.

Some major consequences of this viewpoint would be a physical disadvantage in having biological women compete with transgender women and forcing girls and women to share locker rooms and shower spaces with biological males who identify as women.

This legislation may result in people of faith losing their basic right of religious liberty. Our two Missouri senators and our representative in the Second Congressional District are opposed to this leg- islation. Perhaps the person to write to is President Biden and let him know how upsetting this legisla- tion is to Catholics and people of faith.

God bless,

Msgr. Callahan

40 Days for Life Sign Ups TODAY (for newly adopted day!)

One of St. Joseph Parish’s original “adopted” days on Ash Wednesday (Feb. 17) was cancelled because of dangerous winter weather. St. Joseph Parish has now “adopted” a new day Tuesday, March 30! We pray for the mothers who are seeking an abortion, for the safety of their unborn children, for conversion of those who work in the facility, and for the sidewalk counselors who try to help all of them. Sign up table will be in the gathering area after all Masses March 20/21 and 27/28. To sign up for an hour of prayer

and silent witness, please visit the table or call Bob Behlman (314-973-1427).

The Case For Jesus by Brant Pitre: Book Review;

I first encountered Dr. Pitre’s writing in 2012 in the book Jesus and Jewish Roots of the Eucharist. Since that time, I have read every one of his books. One of his books came back to mind a couple weeks ago when a Protestant friend mentioned that several years ago, in a bible study on The Gospel of John, a priest from Loyola University came to their meeting. He proceeded to tell the group that the Gospel of John is the only gospel where Jesus claims to be the Son of God. Furthermore he claimed John’s Gospel is so different from the other three gospels because it was written as an ad for Christianity which was having trouble attracting new members. I immediately thought of Dr. Pitre’s book The Case for Jesus. He provides excellent arguments to refute the attempts by several contemporary bible scholars to discredit the gospels. For well over a hundred years now, many scholars have questioned the historical truth of the Gospels, claiming that they were originally anonymous. Others have even argued that Jesus did not think he was God and never claimed to be divine. InThe Case for Jesus, Dr. Brant Pitre goes

back to the sources²the biblical and historical evidence for Christ²in order to answer several key questions, including:

•Were the four Gospels really anonymous?

•Are the Gospels folklore? Or are they biographies?

•What about the socalled “Lost Gospels,” such as “Q” and the Gospel of Thomas?

•Did Jesus claim to be God?

•Why was Jesus crucified?

•What is the evidence for the Resurrection?

Several copies are now available in the kiosk in the gathering area priced at $5. There is also a 9 part video series on Formed called Lectio: The Case for Jesus. The book and the videos provide the tools needed to counter the voices trying to undermine our faith. “I Thirst” is now available in the Kiosk for $2.00

The Parish Pulse

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit...? You are not your own.” ~ 1 Corn. 6:19

PORNOGRAPHY &

THEOLOGYOFTHE BODY According to CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH:

“Pornography consists in removing real or simulated sexual acts from the intimacy of the partners, in order to display them deliberately to third

parties. It offends against chastity because it perverts the conjugal act, the intimate giving of spouses to each other. It does grave injury to the dignity of its participants (actors, vendors, the public), since each one becomes an object of base pleasure & illicit profit for others. It immers- es all who are involved in the illusion of a fantasy world. It is a grave offense. Civil authorities should prevent the production/distribution of pornography.” (CCC, 2354).

What is “Theology of the Body” (TOB)?

Pope John Paul II devoted the first major teaching project of his pontifi- cate (a series of 129 talks between September of 1979 & November of 1984) to the goodness, holiness, & beauty of sex. These talks provide a profoundly beautiful vision of human embodiment and erotic love. He gave this project the working title “Theology of the Body.” The union of the sexes is meant to proclaim & foreshadow ± the eternal union of Christ & His Church. As St. Paul says, quoting from Genesis: “’For this reason a man shall leave (his) father & (his) mother & be joined to his wife... the two shall become one flesh.’” This is a great mystery, but I speak in reference to Christ and the Church” (Eph 5: 3132).

By helping us understand this profound interconnection between sex &

the Christian mystery, John Paul’s “Theology of the Body” not only paves the way for lasting renewal of marriage & the family; it enables everyone to rediscover “the meaning of the whole of existence, the meaning of life” (TOB 46:6).

How does the “Theology of the Body” answer the problem of Por- nography?

Christopher West has written extensively on Pope John Paul II’s

“Theology of the Body,” and explains that “for John Paul, we could say that the problem with pornography is not that it reveals too much of the person, but that is reveals far too little. Indeed, it portrays the naked human body without revealing the person at all.” Pope John Paul II teaches us in “Theology of the Body” that marital sexual union is meant be an image of the communion of the Trinity & a participation of the married couple in that same divine mystery through their gift of self to one another.

Properly understood, the union of husband & wife is one of the most sacred realities in the world. When we come to a deeper knowledge of this beautiful teaching, pornography is seen for what it is: a twisted &

empty shadow of God’s magnificent & ultimately, more attractive, plan for our sexuality. Those addicted to pornography find arousal though fantasy & become incapable of finding satisfying arousal in reallife, with a spouse. “Theology of the Body” assists us in replacing lust with purity of heart, which ultimately leads to happiness God intends for everyone .

Is “Theology of the Body” only about sex or for married folks?

NO ! Living in America’s mediasaturated culture, almost everyone needs renewal of the mind & heart when it comes to sex. However,

“Theology of the Body” goes further than a perspective of the sexual act or the human body; John Paul II shows us how our sexuality, being created male and female, reveals & helps us to fulfill the true meaning of our lives. The “Theology of the Body” is not only for married people because Pope John Paul II has given us a systematic understanding of the human person in both the married & celibate vocations. In any state of life, we are called to be a gift. Thus, those who are singlemarried divorcedwidowedconsecrated celibates will find an abundant depth of insight into their state in life.

BEING A “CATHOLIC PARENT”

Parents are the first teachers of their children.

What you teach them at home has a greater im- pact than what we teach them at PSR. Students reflect their parents values, ideas, viewpoints and spirituality. Students whose parents read bible stories, pray together, attend Mass and talk about their faith are more confident and view themselves in a more positive way.

Children need a strong faithlife at home to help them deal with the situations they face in schools, on sports teams and generally in our world. They need to know how to talk to God, pray for help when they need it, and be compas- sionate and caring for others. What does God ask of them? How should they handle a difficult situation? Where can they look for guidance?

MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS LENT 2021

In Lent, may we be increasingly concerned with

“speaking words of comfort, strength, consolation and encouragement, and not words that demean, sadden,

anger or show scorn” (Fratelli Tutti, 223). In order to give hope to others, it is sometimes enough simply to be

kind, to be “willing to set everything else aside in order to show interest, to give the gift of a smile, to speak a

word of encouragement, to listen amid general indifference” (ibid., 224). Through recollection and silent

prayer, hope is given to us as inspiration and interior light, illuminating the challenges and choices we face in

our mission. Hence the need to pray (cf. Mt 6:6) and, in secret, to encounter the Father of tender love.

To experience Lent in hope entails growing in the realization that, in Jesus Christ, we are witnesses of new times, in which God is “making all things new” (cf. Rev 21:1-6). It means receiving the hope of Christ, who gave his life on the cross and was raised by God on the third day, and always being “prepared to make a defense to

anyone who calls [us] to account for the hope that is in [us]” (1 Pet 3:15).
