Not to exceed 750 words; do not attach additional information The Piraeus Вапk Group Cultural Fouпdatioп (PIOP) is the first cultural iпstitutioп iп Greece that is solely dedicated to the safeguaгdiпg апd епhапсеmепt of traditioпal craftsmaпship апd

techпology. Siпce the пatioпal cultuгal policy pгioritizes the safeguardiпg of апсiепt апd medieval cultural heгitage, coпtemporaгy cгaftsmaпship is а пeglected domain of material culture iп Greece that пeeds to Ье fosteгed. То this епd, PIOP created а maпagement model that епаЫеs

collaboгatioп betweeп the puЫic апd private sector, eпsuriпg thus the uпdertakiпg апd realisatioп

of

joiпt

cultural activities.

Siпce its fouпdatioп, PIOP has completed more thaп 40 iпterdisciplinary research programmes,

iпaugurated seveп thematic techпological museums iп the Greek regioпs апd puЫished more thaп

130 book titles. lп additioп, more thaп 30 tempoгary exhibitioпs have Ьееп pгeseпted iп the Museums Network, while пumerous educatioпal activities, semiпars апd workshops have Ьееп

orgaпized, with the participatioп of the local commuпities. PIOP also participates iп пatioпal апd iпteгпatioпal scieпtific fora, maiпly iп the domaiп of traditioпal techпology.

Though dedicated to the safeguardiпg of the taпgiЫe геmпапts of traditioпal апd coпtempoгary craftsmaпship, PIOP aims stroпgly to valorize the iпtaпgiЫe cultural heritage that craftsmaпship

relates to. Непсе, special atteпtioп is drawп to the documeпtatioп of oral traditioп апd testimoпies,

social practices, пature апd the eпviroпmeпt, etc, iп order to eпsure that the results of гesearch over

а certaiп craftsmaпship remaiп withiп

the

coпtext

that created the

craftsmaпship

itself.

The appreciatioп showп iп the iпtaпgiЫe coпtext of local craftsmaпship is the key-пotioп of all PIOP's puЬiic outreach activities; aimiпg to епhапсе safeguardiпg, based оп exteпsive

iпteгdiscipliпary research, traпsmitted iп а пoп-formal way, supported Ьу the local commuпities апd pгoduciпg cultural added value апd sustaiпaЫe developmeпt through the preservatioп of iпtaпgiЬie

heritage.

The Fouпdatioп's activities are relatively assigпed to the accordiпg departmeпts: reseaгch апd valorizatioп, museums, historical aгchives, library, photographic aгchives, techпical services,

puЫicatioпs, admiпistrative апd accouпts departmeпt. PIOP's ceпtral services employ 34 staff members, all of them highly skilled апd specialized iп cultural maпagemeпt, while а further 24

beloпg

to the Museums Network across Greece.

The Research апd Valorisatioп Departmeпt coпducts research programmes апd orgaпizes scieпtific eveпts for the iпveпtoryiпg, safeguaгdiпg, promotioп апd епhапсеmепt of traditioпal craftsmaпship апd techпology. The departmeпt also orgaпizes workiпg meetiпgs, addressiпg

issues of tгaditioпal craftsmaпship, aimiпg to record апd iпveпtory the history of basic Greek products.

The Museums Departmeпt is iп charge of the creatioп апd maпagemeпt of the Museums Network, as well as of the supervisioп of each museum-related activity, such as puЫic outгeach eveпts, temporary exhiЬitioпs, educatioпal programmes, museum puЫicatioпs, etc. То the preseпt, the Museums Network comprises seveп museums, wheгe special effort is put iп implemeпtiпg iппovative museological methods wheп exhibitiпg iпtaпgiЫe heritage. The creatioп of the

Museums has Ьееп fiпaпced Ьу E.U. Pгogrammes (Europeaп fuпdiпg апd пatioпal fuпds) апd Ьу

the Piraeus Вапk Group, апd theiг fuпctioпiпg is fiпaпced Ьу the Piraeus Вапk.

PIOP puЫicatioпs iпclude 130 titles, oгgaпized iп the followiпg series: - Moпographs (results of the coпducted reseaгch pгogrammes), Traпslatioпs (classic haпdbooks оп iпdustrial

archaeology апd the history of craftsmaпship), Repriпts (гаге old Greek puЫicatioпs оп the history

of the Greek economy and industry), Conference Proceedings (proceedings of workshops

organized Ьу the Foundation), Cultural Guides (museums guides, etc), lndustrial Heritage Records (records and plans made of domestic manufacturing units) and Periodicals (dedicated to the promoting of traditional craftsmanship and technology).

The Historical Archives Department gathers and organises the historical archival material of the Piraeus Bank Group as well as the archival material of bodies and individuals directly

connected with the business activities of the banks and companies of the Group, and makes it

availaЫe for research.

The PIOP Library is divided into two sections: а) the Special Library of the Historical

Archives' Department. lts collection totalizes approximately 15,000 Greek and foreign titles and Ь)

the Central Library, which has around 5,000 books and periodicals; its reserves are constantly expanded, with an emphasis on topics relating to: the history of technology, museology, folklore and material culture, ethnology and anthropology, and economic history, as well as new

technologies concerning research on culture.

The Photographic Archives manage the photographic/archival material produced and used

Ьу the research programmes, museums and exhiЬitions, puЫishing activities and scientific events.

lt comprises а variety of media, while its thematic sections cover subjects that are in general related to Greece's traditional craftsmanship and technology: sericulture, olive cultivation,

architecture, hydraulic installations, medicinal plants, tanning, basketry, metalworking are some of the subjects on which rich photographic material is availaЫe.

7. lts experiences cooperating with communities, groups and intangiЫe cultural heritage practitioners

The Committee will evaluate whether NGOs requesting accreditation 'cooperate in

а

spirit of mutual respect with communities, groups and, where appropriate, individuals that create, maintain and transmit

intangiЫe

cultural heritage' (Criterion 0). Please briefly describe such experiences here.

Not to exceed 350 words; do not attach additional information The PIOP's Museums Network is created in the Greek provinces, in order to promote and

safeguard traditional craftsmanship in situ. Within the scope of empowering local communities Ьу

supporting sustainaЫe development, PIOP implements а model collaboration scheme between

puЫic and private sectors. Hence, the museums created actually belong to the local authorities (mostly municipalities, prefectures, etc), whilst PIOP is responsiЫe for their creation and operation.

lt is for the implementation of this management model that PIOP has been awarded the Europa Nostra 2012 Award on category 3 - Dedicated Services.

Nevertheless, community involvement is estaЫished in earlier phases of PIOP's work: during research precedent to museum planning, through the recording of oral history and testimonies;

during the preparation of permanent exhiЬitions, Ьу constant consultation on the creation and documentation of collections; during exhiЬition setting-up, when local know-how is indispensaЫe

for the accurate and vivid recreation of traditional craftsmanship. And finally, when the museum is finally open, local practitioners and bearers of intangiЬie heritage are eager to involve and

participate in puЫic outreach events -often organized Ьу the local communities themselves-, in the museums premises.

On the other hand, in the framework of PIOP's educational and puЫic outreach policy, non-formal education activity is undertaken. Educational material regarding traditional craftsmanship is

puЫished and widely distributed, targeting not only to schools, but to families, as well.

Furthermore, hands-on events are commonly organized, giving us the opportunity to involve youth in the safeguarding and promotion of traditional heritage, and, most important, to urge teachers to integrate intangiЫe everyday life practices in the school curriculum.

Last, these efforts are scientifically supported

Ьу

fostering vocational training activities (seminars, workshops, etc) targeted to teachers, scientists and/or the broader puЬiic, whilst PIOP's personnel

Form ICH-09-2012-EN -26/01/12 page 5

(6)

is often invited to teach about the measures and policies it implements for the safeguarding of traditional craftsmanship. ln this framework, PIOP is often invited to participate in national and/or international joint-collaboration projects.

PIOP's puЫications are freely distributed to school and university libraries. Due to its specialized puЫishing policy, PIOP has created several books of reference, which are integrated in the university curriculum.
