Africa in Figures 1997

INTRODUCTION

This issue of Africa in Figures presents socio-economic statistics and trends. The infonnation is generally given for the years not earlier than and the latest year for which the data is available. The main purpose of the publication is to serve as an appropriate vehicle for disseminating, important and basic facts of Africa in relation to the world. It also presents concise statistical infonnation on each African country so as to facilitate comparisons between these countries in the economic, demographic and social sectors. For most countries, data was compiled bearing in mind the requirements of international comparability and the standards promulgated by the United Nations.

The publication consists of two parts. The first part deals with the World and Africa and includes charts to show trends over a period of fifteen years or beyond. The second part shows, for each African country, important and frequently consulted statistical data.

It is our hope that this publication will be infonnative and useful to a wide range of users of African development information. For further statistical information on African countries, reference should be made to the African Statistical Yearbook, which is also produced by the Development Information Services Division of the Economic Commission for Africa. Both this yearbook and Africa in Figures are produced in English and French, and will in the near future be available on CD-ROM.
