RESUME

Une fason de mesurer le debit d'infiltration d'air dans des bgtiments consiste 1 utiliser de petites quantit6s d'un marqueur gazeux. LrGvaluation du debit d'infiltration est

deduite de la concentration du gaz, mesurge I des intervalles regulkers. Dans la prdsente communication, on analyse deux dthodks de base parmettant de faire cette Bvaluation: la methode de la concentration constante et la mBthode de la d6croissance de la concentration. On d6crit ici un appareil qui esploite un d6tecteur de capture d'dlectrons/chromatographe

portable et quimesure des concentrations d'hexafluorure de souffe (SF6) dans l'air de l'ordre de quelques parties par

milliard. I1 dchantillonne l'air suivant un cycle d'une minute. Dans la mdthode de la d6croissance, la pente de la courbe de la concentration en fonction du temps, tracde sur un papier semilogarithmique peut servir 5 calculer le d6bit d'infiltration. Dans la seconde mgthode, l'appareil injecte la quantite de SF6 necessaire pour garder la concentration du marqueur 1 un niveau constant et fix6 au prgalable. Le

dBbit d'infiltration est proportionnel 1 la quantitg de marqueur gazeux injectge par unit6 de temps.

The a c c u r a c y i s d e p e n d e n t on m e a s u r e m e n t o f t h e f l o w r a t e o f t h e t r a c e r g a s a n d i t s c o n c e n t r a t i o n . T h e d i s a d v a n t a g e s o f t h i s m e t h o d a r e t h a t t h e f l o w c o n t r o l a n d i t s m e a s u r i n g a p p a r a t u s a r e q u i t e com- p l i c a t e d . A s a number o f t r a c e r g a s i n j e c t i o n s i s i n v o l v e d , t h o r o u g h m i x i n g o f t r a c e r g a s a n d a i r c a n b e more d i f f i c u l t t o a c h i e v e t h a n i n t h e d e c a y method w i t h a s i n g l e i n j e c t i o n . A l s o , t h e a b s o l u t e v a l u e o f t h e c o n c e n t r a t i o n o f t r a c e r g a s i n s p a c e m u s t b e known. I n t h e p r e s e n t u n i t , c o n s t a n t c o n c e n t r a t i o n i s a c h i e v e d by c o n t r o l l i n g t h e number o f i n j e c t i o n s o f t r a c e r g a s o f f i x e d q u a n t i t y f r o m t h e d i s c h a r g e u n i t . The a i r i s s a m p l e d a n d t h e c o n c e n t r a t i o n i s m e a s u r e d on a 2-1/2-min. c y c l e . The p r o g r a m m a b l e c a l c u l a t o r i n t h e s y s t e m c a n c a l l up t o 9 0 i n j e c t i o n s o f t r a c e r g a s f o r t h e 2-1/2-min. p e r i o d .

CHOICE OF A TRACER GAS

A w i d e v a r i e t y o f m a t e r i a l s a r e b e i n g u s e d a s t r a c e r g a s e s . Of t h e s e , s u l p h u r h e x a f l u o r i d e ( S F 6 ) i s ~ a r t i c u l a r l y s u i t a b l e f o r a i r i n f i l t r a t i o n s t u d i e s i n v o l - v i n g c o n t i n u o u s m e a s u r e m e n t a n d l a r g e b u i l d i n g s . The u s e o f SF6 was f i r s t r e p o r t e d as a t r a c e r g a s i n 1 9 6 5 ( 3 ) . I t h a s a l l o f t h e d e s i r e d p r o p e r t i e s o f a t r a c e r . I t i s i n e r t , r e l a t i v e l y n o n - t o x i c , c o l o r l e s s , o d o r l e s s , t a s t e l e s s , n o n - f l a m m a b l e , n o n - c o r r o s i v e a n d t h e r m a l l y s t a b l e . I t i s n o t a n o r m a l b a c k g r o u n d c o n s t i t u e n t o f a i r . The s i x f l u o r i d e a t o m s i n t h e m o l e c u l e make t h e compound e x t r e m e l y s e n s i t i v e t o a n e l e c t r o n c a p t u r e d e t e c t o r . T h e r e a r e c e r t a i n p r o b l e m s w h i c h m u s t b e c o n s i d e r e d when u s i n g SF6 a s a t r a c e r . The d e t e c t o r u n i t may r e q u i r e f r e q u e n t c a l i b r a t i o n t o m a i n t a i n t h e d e s i r e d a c c u r a c y . A l s o , b e c a u s e o f t h e h i g h s e n s i t i v i t y o f t h e d e t e c t o r , m i n o r l e a k s i n r e g u l a t o r s , v a l v e s a n d c o n n e c t i o n s , w h i c h w o u l d go u n n o t i c e d i n o t h e r g a s m e a s u r e m e n t s y s t e m s , a r e c o m p l e t e l y u n a c c e p t a b l e when SF6 i s u s e d a s a n i n d o o r t r a c e r . The m e a s u r e m e n t s a r e i n t h e f o r m o f c h r o m a t o g r a p h i c p e a k s w h i c h may r e q u i r e s p e c i a l e q u i p m e n t f o r a u t o m a t i o n a n d d a t a p r o c e s s i n g .

A N AUTOMATED SYSTEM FOR MEASURING A I R INFILTRATION

The a i r i n f i l t r a t i o n m e a s u r i n g s y s t e m i s made up o f t h r e e s u b s y s t e m s , a s f o l - l o w s : 1) t h e p r o g r a m m a b l e c a l c u l a t o r , 2 ) t h e SF6 d i s c h a r g e s y s t e m , 3 ) t h e SF6 m e a s u r i n g s y s t e m . The SF6 d i s c h a r g e s y s t e m a n d t h e SF6 m e a s u r i n g s y s t e m a r e c o n t r o l l e d by t h e INPUT a n d OUTPUT i n s t r u c t i o n o f t h e c a l c u l a t o r . T h e r e a r e two modes o f c o n t r o l . One mode t r i g g e r s t h e d i s c h a r g e s e q u e n c e d i r e c t l y by o u t p u t t i n g two c o n t r o l w o r d s i n s e q u e n c e . Each t i m e t h e two o u t p u t w o r d s a r e u s e d , o n e volume o f SF6 i s d i s c h a r g e d . T h i s d i s c h a r g e c a n b e r e p e a t e d e v e r y 0.9 s e c . T h i s mode c a n b e u s e d e i t h e r f o r t h e c o n s t a n t c o n c e n t r a t i o n o r t h e d e c a y m e t h o d .

The s e c o n d mode c o n t r o l s t h e t i m e i n t e r v a l b e t w e e n t h e a u t o m a t i c d i s - c h a r g e o f o n e volume o f SFg. The t e s t s h a v e shown t h a t t h e SF6-detector/chromatograph, a s u s e d i n t h e a u t o m a t e d s y s t e m , g i v e s r e l i a b l e r e s u l t s .

( 2 ) F i e l d T e s t

The a i r i n f i l t r a t i o n m e a s u r e m e n t s y s t e m was t e s t e d i n a 3-bedroom,

e x p e r i m e n t a l e n e r g y c o n s e r v a t i o n h o u s e i n R e g i n a , C a n a d a , u s i n g b o t h t h e d e c a y a n d t h e c o n s t a n t c o n c e n t r a t i o n m e t h o d s . F o r t h e d e c a y m e t h o d , SF6 was i n t r o d u c e d a u t o m a t i c a l l y i n t o t h e f u r n a c e a i r r e c i r c u l a t i o n f a n a t a s e l e c t e d SF6 c o n c e n t r a t i o n l e v e l , a n d t h e b u i l d - u p a n d d e c a y o f t r a c e r i n t h e h o u s e was m e a s u r e d f r o m t h e s a m p l e e x t r a c t e d f r o m t h e r e t u r n a i r d u c t . F o r t h e c o n s t a n t c o n c e n t r a t i o n m e t h o d , t r a c e r g a s was i n j e c t e d d o w n s t r e a m o f t h e f u r n a c e f a n , a n d t h e s a m p l i n g was d o n e a h e a d o f t h e f a n . I n b o t h t e s t s , t h e d a t a w e r e r e c o r d e d on t h e m a g n e t i c t a p e c a s s e t t e o f t h e HP9815 c a l c u l a t o r , a n d p l a y e d b a c k o r p r i n t e d o n t h e r m a l p r i n t e r p a p e r . The f u r n a c e f a n was o p e r a t e d c o n t i n u o u s l y d u r i n g t h e e x p e r i m e n t t o a c h i e v e good m i x i n g . S a m p l e s w e r e t a k e n f r o m t h e r e t u r n d u c t e v e r y 2 m i n . S e v e r a l t e s t s w e r e c o n d u c t e d t o c h e c k t h e r e l i a b i l i t y o f t h e s y s t e m .
