At a time of economic turmoil, employment is a matter of concern for ail - and particulary for young people. The first theme of New Standpoints 50 is workers' rights, with an

overview of labor Unions in the U.S.A.

Today's workers have difficulty preserv- ing their rights. This leads into our next theme: the Great Depression in the

1930s, when things were even harder for the working class, and for the Okies who were forced to flee the Dust Bowl and migrate to California in search of a better life, as portrayed in The Grapes of Wrath.

We propose a slide show on these two topics (the Depression and the Dust Bowl) for class use. It is available on www.newstandpoints.com and includes audio commentary asweilas still photos.

The slide show can make an excellent introduction to having pupils read an ex- tract fram The Grapes of.Wrath. Bath the novel and the film fit the requirements of the new Enseignement de la littérature.

Without straying faT from the world of work, we pravide idioms on the theme of money, as weil as an article about the ethics of niche marketing to racial 'minorities in the U.S.A.

On a lighter note, some Victoriana: we'lI read about Victoria and Albert's royal love story. Victorian England was also the cradle of bath of the artistic movements explored in the Cuit of Beauty exhibition at the Musée d'Orsay, through January 2012.

Younger pupils will take a first step into the workplace and work placements or get acquainted with exciting scientific jobs. They can also have fun playing a guessing game with Victoria & Albert's children.

With dark, wintry days upon us, Claudine Martina pravides some upbeat advice on bringing a bit of cheer and making pupils laugh in English class.
