Abstract

This thesis deals with agricultural and mining development in Nigeria in 1900-1956. Its objective is to examine the evolution of Nigerian agriculture and mining during this period focussing on colonial development planning which was designed to improve the welfare and the well being of the colonized people.

In order to achieve this thesis, i relied on official sources such as Colonial Office, Colonial Reports, Command Papers (Cmd) and Annual Reports. Other secondary sources were also helpful including books and journals that are available in the library of the American University of Egypt and related to the economic history of Nigeria.

This thesis includes four chapters. The first is a historical background of the structure of traditional agriculture and mining before 1900. The second examines colonial agricultural and mining policy in 1900-1929. The third treats the beginning of colonial development policy. The fourth chapter discusses colonial agricultural and mining development policy in 1945-1956 focussing on the Ten-Year Plan, its objectives, the financial assistance, the agricultural and mining development projects and the reactions of the Nigerian farmers and miners towards such a policy.

Agricultural and mining development was achieved at the expense of both the farmer and the miner who were enforced to produce the important products to satisfy British needs. Although colonial development policy included many projects, the British achieved only those that served them. The British were not well prepared to undertake the task of planning immediately after WWII. The farmer and the miner led a struggle to preserve their rights but they remained marginalized.
