lstituto Cantonale Batteriosierologico, 6900 Lugano Ribotyping (EcoRI) and deoxyribonucleic acid hybridization were used to confirm the clustering of
Yersinia frederiksenii strains, previously analyzed by multilocus enzyme electrophoresis (MLEE).
13 strains of Y. frederiksenii isolated from water and from feces of symptomatic patients were tested and compared to both the ATCC reference strain
Y.frederiksenii and other Yersinia species.
The results revealed that grouping of strains determined by MLEE is reproducible and correlates with ribotyping and DNA-DNA hybridization. On the basis of DNA homology studies, which showed a low grade of relatedness, it could be assumed that Y.frederiksenii species is not homogeneous but includes more groups or new species.
The current phenotypic species differentiation procedure does not yet differentiate between these groups.
