ECA Press Release No. 25/2003

CAIRO TO HOLD A SUB-REGIONAL WORKSHOP ON GOOD GOVERNANCE

Addis Ababa, 3 December 2003 (ECA) -- The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) is co-hosting with the African Development Bank (ADB), and in partnership with the African Union (AU) a workshop in Cairo, Egypt from 9-10 December 2003 to discuss specific sub-regional dimensions and continent-wide perspectives on good governance in the three countries in North Africa and the Horn of Africa currently a part of ECA’s groundbreaking study to assess and monitor progress toward good governance in Africa. Based on 83 indicators, results from 28 countries will be published in the inaugural Africa Governance Report to be released in early 2004. ECA’s work is founded on country studies conducted in collaboration with local research partners.

The Cairo workshop will comprise researchers from the institutes that carried out the governance study in Egypt, Ethiopia, and Morocco. Government officials, civil society members, academics, and representatives from the private sector and media in the sub-regions will also deliberate the findings.

Results from the workshop will feed into the Fourth African Development Forum (ADF IV) to take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 7-11 March 2004 under the theme, ‘Governance for a Progressing Africa’. ADF is an initiative led by ECA to set up an Africa-driven development agenda. ADF IV will provide the political space for a broad spectrum of interested parties to gain a deeper understanding of the various dimensions of governance The Forum will also address key challenges, coordinate existing initiatives, and develop strategies for the implementation and monitoring of good governance practices at the national, sub-regional and regional levels.

The ADB/AU/ECA partnership in ADF IV is part of a broader collaboration between the three institutions on promoting good governance in Africa.

The sub-regional workshop for Eastern and Southern Africa was held in Lusaka, Zambia from 24-26 November and covered fourteen countries. The workshop for Central and West Africa is being held in Accra from 1-3 December and covering eleven countries.
