ACCOUNT OF T,;ORK IK TOPOGRAPHY AND CARTOGRAPHY

The work in topography and cartography carried out in Gabon from 1 January 1963 to 30 June 1966 is set out below.

I. - AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS (by the Institut Geographique National Frangais)

Gabon is a country which is full of indentations and at the same time very well wooded, and aerial photographs are the sine qua non of

almost every study of development and improvement (in mines, forests, oommunications routes, etc)* Indeed a considerable effort has been

made in this field. Besides, it has borne fruit since in spite of the

exceptional atmospheric conditions which are almost constantly unfavourable, 145)000 kmp have been photographed on a scale approaching 1*50,000.

This result has been obtained largely through the use of infra-red

emulsions, and a super-wide an&le camera of short focal length (Wild-RC.9)»

The sheets covered by these photographs are those of : Oyem, Minkebe, MekambOj Sembe, Kango, Mitzic, Makokou, Baloala, Lambarene, Booue, Lastoursville, Okondja, Ewo, Mouila; Koulamoutou, Franceville, Ndende•

At present, throughout the whole of Gabon, 30,000 sq., km only remain to be photographed.

It is worth pointing out in addition that another photograph of

the town of Libreville was taken' in 1964 on the scale of Is 6,000.

II. ASTRONOMY - GEODESY

Altogether 44 new astronomical points have been pegged and observed since 1963, and this almost completes the whole of the control network

of the north, centre and east of Gabon,,

It is worth noting also the particularly excellent results obtained recently by the use of a helicopter for taking observation teams to

mountainous areas. The result was that the output obtained was 5 times

as great as usual.
