In [1]
wereported the existence of
an anoma-lous increase of intensity, observed by
neutronpowder diffraction, occurring in
amagnetic field
below Tc,
onthe 001 nuclear reflection ring of
the superconductor YBa2Cu307. Two symmet- ric spots appeared in
aplane normal
tothe mag- netic field direction. This result
wasobtained
ona
non-compacted powder sample.
In the absence of any appreciable modula-
tion in intensity
onthe
restof the ring (no ap-
parent texturation),
wesuggested that this effect
could be due
to amagnetic organization within
the sample. However, because of the regular
re-actor
shut-down,
wecould
notperform further experiments.
Very recently additional
measurements onsintered and non-sintered samples, with various oxygen concentrations,
aswell
asthe observa-
tion of other nuclear reflections, reveal that the effect previously reported only
occursfor uncon-
strained powders and is due
to amagneto-mecha-
nical orientation of the grains,
aconsequence of the very anisotropic magnetic properties shown by this material below Tc [2].
The apparent reversibility
weobserved in
the first experiment when the magnetic field
wasswitched off,
wasdue
to adisorientation of the
grains by the vibrations of
ourlow-temperature
device. In absence of vibrations, the structura-
tion of the diffraction ring induced by the mag- netic field remains stable
evenabove Tc.
Finally,
werecently received
apreprint by
J.M. Tranquada et al. [3] who reproduced
ourobservation of the alignment of YBa2Cu30fi par- ticles in
amagnetic field, and which provides
aconfirmation of
ourresults.
Experiments
arein progress in order
toob-
tain
moreinformation concerning the
non-con-ventional structuration of the diffraction spec- trum, associated with this magneto-mechanical
effect.
