SUMMER SCHOOL PRESENTATION
This summer school departs from a paradox. Whereas an increasing number of scholars take comparison as a key dimension of their research design – a trend stimulated by several factors such as European integration, globalization, and the demands of international institutions such as the European Union, the OECD, and the World Bank -, only a few number of training programs really take up the challenge of helping individual researchers to build comparisons.
In order to fill this gap, we propose to bring together comparatists from various disciplines of the social sciences.
Indeed, we assume that the questions and difficulties they encounter overcome disciplinary borders. Besides, we hope that an interdisciplinary setting will encourage the participants to compare and confront their analytical and methodological approaches. Particular interest will be devoted to the various forms of comparison: between nations, regions or political entities, between social groups and historical periods.
Each session will be divided into two parts. First, a senior researcher will give a lecture on the topic. This lecture will be followed by a debate with the (junior) participants.
Second, we will organize small-group workshops so that each participant has the opportunity to present his/her research and the corresponding (comparative) methodology.
Here again, each presentation will be followed by a discussion with the audience and the senior researchers.
