ARCHIVES COMMITTEE

The spring issue of theBulletin(vol.22, no. 1,p.20) included a short note on the créationof aprovincial représentatives network designed to keep the CHA Council better informed of the archivai situation across Canada, thus enabling it to intervene more effectivelyon behalf of the profession to improve thesitua tionor at least try toprevent it from worsening. The note listed the names and addresses ofreprésentatives. These provincial représentativesail hâve a spécifie and a generalmandate. Their spécifie mandate istocontacttheirprovincial archivist onmatters which the Council deems of crucial interest, such as access to information or theconservation of electronic archives. It is also hoped that provincial représentatives will seek out additional information, ifpossible, by contacting their provincial association of archivists to make their concernsbetter known. Theirgeneral mandate is simply to forward members’archive-related comments and concerns to the Council. To clearup any misunderstanding by the archivai community ofthe Council’s objectives, we would underscore that nothing in the note suggests condemning, deni- grating or underestimating their enormous contribution to our shared objectives of preserving and enhancing Canada’s documentary héritage. Rather, theArchives Committee aims to enable the Council and the Executive to corne to the aid of archivai collections besieged by the current climate ofbudget cuts and the ‘rationalization’ of mandates and structures.
